The question is one of deep interest, involving in it the present and future happiness of thousands, and the property of all. I have endeavoured to avoid the beaten tract, not because I would undervalue the truths which my predecessors have established, but because I should only have to repeat them, without adding to their strength or to their attraction. This circumstance will make my performance appear very imperfect to one who is only beginning to consider the subject; but had I attempted to render it complete, it could not have appeared until much of the interest now excited would have subsided; and I am willing to forego the credit of a systematic treatise for the advantage of being useful at the present juncture.
