The finest ghazals of Mir Taqi Mir, the most accomplished of Urdu poets. The prolific Mir Taqi Mir (1723–1810), widely regarded as the most accomplished poet in Urdu, composed his ghazals—a poetic form of rhyming couplets—in a distinctive Indian style arising from the Persian ghazal tradition. Here, the lover and beloved live in a world of extremes: the outsider is the hero, prosperity is poverty, and death would be preferable to the indifference of the beloved. Ghazals offers a comprehensive collection of Mir’s finest work, translated by a renowned expert on Urdu poetry.

THE MASTER'S WORDS: Poems (Ghazals) inspired by sayings of Meher Baba by Paul Smith. From the 1920's into the late sixties the great Indian God-Realized Spiritual Master Meher Baba (1894-1969), composed unique ghazals under the pen-name of Huma. Now after 40 years as his disciple and being a poet from the mid-sixties, Paul Smith, uses the unique sayings of Meher Baba as the first lines to compose his own ghazals about love, spirituality, God, the present crises. The author carries on the ancient tradition of the ghazal and completes the task with love and dedication and the experience of writing hundreds of his own (the first in English) and translating for over 40 years those of Huma, Hafiz, Sadi, Nesimi, 'Attar and many others. Included are biographies of both poets and an article on Form, Function and History of the oldest, most mysterious, most beautiful poetic form... the still popular ghazal. Large Print (16pt) & Large Format (8.5" x 11") Pages 216. "To penetrate into the essence of all being and significance and to release the fragrance of that inner attainment for the guidance and benefit of others, by expressing in the world of forms, truth, love, purity and beauty... this is the only game which has any intrinsic and absolute worth. All other, happenings, incidents and attainments can, in themselves, have no lasting importance." Meher Baba. Comments on Paul Smith's Version of Hafiz's 'Divan'. "It is not a joke... the English version of all the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished." Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran. "Superb translations. 99% Hafiz 1% Paul Smith." Ali Akbar Shapurzman, translator into Persian and knower of Hafiz's Divan off by heart. Paul Smith (b. 1945) is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets of Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages, including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan, Obeyd Zakani, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Khayyam, Rudaki, Yunus Emre, Lalla Ded, Iqbal, Ghalib and many others, as well as poetry, fiction, plays, biographies and screenplays. amazon.com/author/smithpa

GHAZALS (Sufi Mystical Love Poems) of NIZAMI & 'ATTAR Translation & Introduction Paul Smith. NIZAMI (d. 1208) is a true Sufi Master Poet who is most famous for his six books in masnavi form: The Treasury of Mysteries, Layla and Majnun, Khrosrau and Shirin, The Seven Portraits and his two books on Alexander. He also composed a Divan of approximately 22,000 couplets mostly in ghazals, tragically only 205 ghazals remain and all are here translated. The influence of his ghazals on those of 'Attar, Rumi, Sadi, Hafiz and Jami and all others that followed was profound. Here is also a good selection from his other masterpiece masnavis, ruba'is and a qasida in the long Introduction on the life and Times .'ATTAR is seen with Sana'i and Rumi (who he met and influenced) as one of the three most important Sufi Poet-Masters of the 13th century. He composed over forty books mainly in the epic masnavi form, his most famous being The Book of God and The Conference of the Birds. He also composed many powerful mystical /love poems in the ghazal form that influenced Sadi and Hafiz and all who came later. 'Attar's powerful, honest and controversial ghazals remain as fresh today as they always were. With 'Attar the image of the 'rend'... the drunken debauchee, the thief of love, the carefree outsider, the honest scallywag, appears as the poet, the lover... the voice of the ghazal. Here is by far the largest translation of his ghazals in English in the correct-rhyme structure with the beauty and meaning and all by his translator inspired by their first couplets. Introduction: Life & Times and Poetry of each poet and essay on the Ghazal. Selected Bibliographies, Glossary. Large Print (14pt) & Large Format Paperback (7" x 10"). 420 pages. Comments on Paul Smith's Translation of Hafiz's 'Divan'. "It is not a joke... the English version of All the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished." Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran. "Superb translations. 99% Hafiz 1% Paul Smith." Ali Akbar Shapurzman, translator of many mystical works in English into Persian and knower of Hafiz's Divan off by heart. "Smith has probably put together the greatest collection of literary facts and history concerning Hafiz." Daniel Ladinsky (Penguin Books author). "I was very impressed with the beauty of these books." Dr. R.K. Barz. Faculty of Asian Studies, Australian National University.
