During the contract year several results of prior LAMPF experiments were completed and prepared for publication. Progress was made in the data analysis of other experiments. Three LAMPF variable energy experiments were carried out with the polarized target PPT-VI: sigma/sub total, transverse/ (p(polarized)p(polarized)) and A/sub YY/ for p(polarized)p(polarized) elastic scattering at 14 energies between 300 and 800 MeV, and A/sub YY/ for p(polarized)p(polarized) .-->. d.pi. at a few energies. Proposals were made for future experiments: two for continued nucleon-nucleon studies and one for a search for neutrino oscillations.

Progress was made during the year on data analysis on ten experimental topics. Theoretical contributions were made to four of these topics. Three publications resulted. During the year a new experiment (p + p --> p?n) was initiated, and preliminary analysis shows large polarization asymmetries. Two Ph. D. degrees were awarded to student members of the group. Three papers in this report with significant data are indexed individually.

During the contract year progress was made in the goals of studying intermediate energy physics. Experiments E-80, E-81, and E-197 were carried out at LAMPF. The year was largely devoted to data acquisition and the analysis of the data acquired. Significant improvements in the data capture programs and system hardware resulted in improvements in data collection. A list of publications is included. (JFP).

During the contract year progress was made in data analysis and interpretation of a number of LAMPF experiments: E-80 (?{sup +-} scattering from nuclei), E-81 (pp and pd reactions), E-341 (pd --> d?n), E-82 (?{sup +-}d reactions), and E-197 (pd --> 3He?°). This anaysis was aided by the start of operation of a new PDP 11/34 computer system. A list of publications is included.
