Compiled by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and annotated by a corps of more than 130 specialists in various disciplines, the Handbook alternates from year to year between social sciences and humanities. The Handbook annotates works on Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and the Guianas, Spanish South America, and Brazil, as well as materials covering Latin America as a whole. Most of the subsections are preceded by introductory essays that serve as biannual evaluations of the literature and research under way in specialized areas. Trust and Governance is a book that translates reflections on social aspects of the economy. It is an adaptation of a monograph completed in 2009, in which the respective theme was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics, shared between Oliver Williamson and Elinor Ostrom. It is an old and increasingly current theme. The relevance of paying attention to human and social aspects is pressing in public and private institutions. This work explores philosophical thoughts about the validity of scientific methods and the possibility of comparing different theories, to benefit from complementarities. In this sense, we must always return to Adam Smith, who already recognized the influence of social aspects on the economy. In this analysis, we highlight the contribution of Francis Fukuyama, who spoke in his book “TRUST” about aspects inherent to spontaneous sociability and the desire for recognition. These aspects are relevant to understanding social capital, an indispensable element for the economics of transaction costs.
