They are at no trouble to settle which definition of education is most satisfactory to them, they are not oppressed by the importance of the subject with which they have to deal. The child belongs to them; its relations to society and humanity do not come within the scope of their thought. They gather up, in some sort of fashion, the cur rent ideas of their time with regard to the bringing up of children, and they act upon these.
