Northern Arcadia is a comparative study of the accounts of foreign visitors to the Nordic lands during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

The Nevada Northern Railway is the sole survivor from a grand era when railroads served mines throughout the state. Built in 1905-1906 to develop the incredible copper deposits of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company in White Pine County, it was--and still is--a workaday railroad. Although its primary purpose was to haul ore, it eventually served the community with a daily passenger train between East Ely and Cobre until 1941. Over 4.5 million people rode the trains, and a mountain of copper ore was moved. In 1983, the Nevada Northern Railway ceased operating, and two years later the entire ore line, including the railroad's yard and shop facilities in East Ely, was donated to the White Pine Historical Railroad Foundation that now operates the railway as a museum. Instead of relics in glass cases or repainted old equipment on static display, the museum preserves a working steam railroad, delighting train enthusiasts year-round with passenger service and special seasonal excursions.

In the nineteenth century, the ancient ‘filial tie’ between Britain and Norway was rediscovered by a booming tourist industry which took thousands across the North Sea to see the wonders of the fjords, the fjelds, and the beauties of the North Cape. Mantua, Virginia, sprouted outside Washington, DC, after World War II because of its convenient location between the Little River Turnpike and US Route 50, roads that made commuting into the nation's capital easy. But Mantua's roots go back to a 1685 Northern Neck of Virginia land grant. Gristmills operated along the Accotink Creek, which still defines the terrain. Civil War major John Henry Chichester's family named Mantua, which stretched south to Glenbrook Road farms, under three miles from the Fairfax Court House, where the first Confederate soldier was killed. The area gradually changed from farms where grain grew and livestock grazed to a wooded suburb with Mid-Century Modern houses. Federal workers and military personnel put down roots, establishing a community. An underground oil spill in 1990 united residents determined to overcome unwanted national attention and continue a small-town America lifestyle in the shadow of the nation's capital.

Northern Kentucky's Dixie Highway is a slice of Americana pie. Known also as U.S. 25 and the Lexington-Covington Turnpike, the once-rural route connects the urban cores of Cincinnati, Covington, and Newport to Central Kentucky. Originally a buffalo trail and named in the early 1800s, the route became a paved national highway in the 1920s. The creation of the thoroughfare encouraged the growth of several communities along its route that still thrive today. Images of America: Northern Kentucky's Dixie Highway captures historic images of the people and places along the Dixie Highway beginning in Covington and heading south through Boone County.
