The Northern Water Resources Studies Program is one of two programs funded by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) to deal with mining and the environment. Over the past two years, the Water Resources Division of DIAND has sponsored a series of workshops to review the current state of knowledge about the interactions between northern mineral development and aquatic ecosystems, to identify critical information or research gaps, and to devise a study program to fill those gaps. This report summarizes the findings of these workshops. It describes the environment of the Northwest Territories and Yukon; mineral development in the North and the potential impact from exploration, mine site development and operation, and closure and reclamation; and research needs and prospective studies on water resources, hydrological and physical processes, and biological and ecosystem processes.

This bibliography contains 215 annotated citations on the effect of mining metal-bearing ores (excluding placer mining) on the fresh water and marine ecosystems of the Northwest Territories and the Yukon. Most types of printed information are included, such as journal articles, conference papers, theses, and reports. In the main section, citations are arranged by author, with authorless publications at the beginning. Three indexes refer back to the main section by citation number: subject, geographic location, and titles.

Nutrient recycling, habitat for plants and animals, flood control, and water supply are among the many beneficial services provided by aquatic ecosystems. In making decisions about human activities, such as draining a wetland for a housing development, it is essential to consider both the value of the development and the value of the ecosystem services that could be lost. Despite a growing recognition of the importance of ecosystem services, their value is often overlooked in environmental decision-making. This report identifies methods for assigning economic value to ecosystem servicesâ€"even intangible onesâ€"and calls for greater collaboration between ecologists and economists in such efforts.

This classroom resource provides clear, concise scientific information in an understandable and enjoyable way about water and aquatic life. Spanning the hydrologic cycle from rain to watersheds, aquifers to springs, rivers to estuaries, ample illustrations promote understanding of important concepts and clarify major ideas.
