Excerpt from North Carolina Schools and Academies, 1790-1840: A Documentary History Physical Equipment of the Sch0075. - These documents give us only glimpses of the school buildings and their equipment. It is well to remember that the North Carolina of this period was a sparsely settled, agricultural State with no large towns. It is well to remember, too, that blackboards were not much in use anywhere in the world before 1820 and that modern school desks and furniture were unknown every where. Academies were a prevalent form of higher schooling during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in the United States. The authors in this volume look at the academy as the dominant institution of higher schooling in the United States, highlighting the academy's role in the formation of middle class social networks and culture in the mid-nineteenth century. They also reveal the significance of the academy for ethnic, religious, and racial minorities who organized independent academies in the face of exclusion and discrimination by other private and public institutions.
