This book transfers the newest service research concepts, such as value co-creation, to family forestry context. The book is aimed at as learning material for higher-education students in Western economies, and as a handbook for forest scientists worldwide. It has a strong theoretical base, but also a practical orientation with examples of novel forest services from different regions and contexts. The five parts of the book are: I Conceptualization of Service Approaches in Family Forestry; II Market and Policy Environment; III Public Service and Business Innovations; IV Communication, Cooperation, and Organizations for Services; and V Transitions Governance. Each part begins with a chapter that is more conceptual and thus sets the stage for the subsequent chapters, which then focus on a regional perspective or some more specific theme under the part’s coverage.

Nature's engineering of wood through genetics, wind, and weather creates a wide variability in wood as a material. Consequently, manufacture and users of wood products are frequently frustrated in dealing with the forest resource. Manufacturers sometimes argue that wood is difficult to consistently process into quality products because of the wide range of properties that exist in this raw material. Users of wood products can be equally frustrated with the performance variability found in finished products. Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technologies have contributed significantly toward eliminating the cause of these frustrations. NDE technologies have been developed and are currently used in lumber and veneer grading programs that result in engineered materials that have consistent well-defined performance characteristics. This brief volume explores some of the processes that are used to manufacture wood, including green wood technology and provides a bit of history to wood production and its uses too. This guide showcases the increasing interest in ecosystem services, discusses the motivations for valuations of FES (forest ecosystem services) at the State level, and places this work in the context of economic accounting. Flavours and fragrances are an important group of non-wood forest products. This publication contains information about sources, uses, manufacturing processes, markets, research needs and development potential of nine selected flavours and fragrances of plant origin. The selected flavours and fragrances represent the different varieties or types of the product. Countless numbers of such flavours and fragrances have found their way via essential oils into everyday life, for example: foods, drinks and confectionary items; products of personal use such as perfumes, deodorants, shampoos, soaps, toothpastes and mouth washes; pharmaceutical preparations to mask disagreeable tastes; items used in the house or office or in industry such as air fresheners, detergents, cleaning agents and the like; tobacco products and so on. The purpose of this publication is to disseminate useful information on this important group of products and thereby to promote their development.
