Discusses a broad scope of subject matters including multimedia systems in their widest sense, web systems and network technologies. This monograph also includes texts which deals with traditional information systems that draw on the experience of the multimedia and network systems.

Growth of knowledge, unparalleled in the history of the human race, results in the rapid development of technology. The solutions that until quite recently remained in the domain of science-fiction now become a part of our everyday life. Information systems and their technologies enter all the spheres of human’s existence. Their influence is multiplied by network connections and by multimedia presentations and communications. Our intention was to offer to the readers of this monograph a very broad review of the recent scientific problems in that area. Searching for their solutions had became a principal task of numerous scientific teams all over the world. Preparing this book we have asked for cooperation many European research teams. In effect the monograph is a collection of carefully selected and the most representative – in our opinion - investigations, solutions, and applications presented by different scientific groups from nine countries. The two-volume proceedings of the ACIIDS 2015 conference, LNAI 9011 + 9012, constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems, held in Bali, Indonesia, in March 2015. Multimedia technology has the potential to transform end user computing from interactive text and graphics models into something more compatible with the digital and electronic world of the new century. This book aims to help technology professionals gain an understanding and perspective on areas related to multimedia computing and communication, while addressing the major issues and challenges in the design and management of multimedia information systems.

From its very beginning, legal informatics was mostly limited to the study of legal databases, but very early on, the Institute of Legal Information Theory and Techniques (ITTIG) started being involved with the specific topic of the Jurix conference, namely knowledge-based systems. This book includes programmatic papers with precise accounts of applications and prototypes. In many domains the focus has changed. For instance, research in retrieval has moved from classical Boolean systems into the management of documents in the Web. It addresses in particular standards and methods for embedding machine readable information into such documents and search methods that deal with heterogeneous information. Similarly, with regard to legal concepts, the focus has moved from thesauri to ontologies or to techniques for the automatic extraction of concepts from natural language texts. In the domain of legal reasoning merely deductive inferences have been expanded with models of legal argumentation, dialogue and mediation. The conference Logica, informatica e diritto 1981 and Jurix 2008 share the connection between theoretical models and the development of applications and prototypes. However, while in 1981 one could mostly see a juxtaposition of papers in legal theory and papers in computer applications, in 2008 we can see how discussions of issues in legal theory are embedded within contributions to legal informatics. This shows how research in legal informatics is increasingly becoming an autonomous domain of scientific inquiry by creatively incorporating and developing knowledge and methods from the two disciplines from which it originates (legal theory and computer science), while preserving links with them.

The Eighth International Baltic Conference on Databases and Information Systems took place on June 2–5 2008 in Tallinn, Estonia. This conference is continuing a series of successful bi-annual Baltic conferences on databases and information systems (IS). The aim is to provide a wide international forum for academics and practitioners in the field of databases and modern information systems for exchanging their achievements in this area. The original research results presented in Databases and Information Systems V mostly belong to novel fields of IS and database research such as database technology and the semantic web, ontology-based IS, IS and AI technologies and IS integration. The contribution of Dr. Jari PalomÄki showed how different ontological commitments affect the way we are modeling the world when creating an information system. As semantic technologies have been gaining more attention recently, a special session on semantic interoperability of IS was organized. The invited talks from each Baltic State gave a good insight how semantic interoperability initiatives are developing in each of the Baltic States and how they relate to the European semantic interoperability framework.

"Since its start ten years ago, the International Conference in Formal Ontology on Information Systems (FOIS) has explored the multiple perspectives on the notion of ontology that have arisen from such diverse research communities as philosophy, logic, computer science, cognitive science, linguistics, and various scientific domains. As ontologies have been applied in new and exciting domains such as the World Wide Web, bioinformatics, and geographical information systems, it has become evident that there is a need for ontologies that have been developed with solid theoretical foundations based on philosophical, linguistic and logical analysis.
