With screening and selection of biocatalysts being undervalued in Europe in comparison with USA and especially Japan, the working parties "Applied Biocatalysis" and "Microbial Physiology" of the European Federation of Biotechnology decided to organise an international symposium entitled "New Frontiers in Screening for Microbial Biocatalysts".Novel screening techniques, microbial biodiversity, microbial physiology and molecular genetics were discussed to give better insights into possibilities and limitations of obtaining biocatalysts from nature. These proceedings provide a comprehensive overview of the present state-of-the-art in the field of biocatalysts screening.

“Frontiers in Natural Product Chemistry” is an Ebook series devoted to publishing the latest and most important advances in natural product chemistry. The Ebook series covers all aspects of research in the chemistry and biochemistry of naturally occurring compounds including coverage of work on natural substances of land and sea and of plants, microbes and animals. Discussion of structure elucidation, synthesis and experimental biosynthesis of natural products as well as developments of new methods are included. Chosen eminent scientists write contributions and each volume are devoted to major advances in natural product chemistry. Topics include the isolation, structure, biosynthesis, biological activity, and chemistry of the major groups of natural products such as alkaloids, terpenoids, steroids, aliphatic, aromatic and O-heterocyclic compounds, and other metabolites of plant, marine and microbial origins, developments in enzymology, nucleic acids, genetics, chemical ecology, primary and secondary metabolism, isolation and analytical techniques, and other areas which will be of general interest to all workers in the area. “Frontiers in Natural Product Chemistry” is essential for all scientists involved in natural product chemistry who wish to keep abreast of rapid and important developments in the field.

Two decades have passed since the mechanisms of protein synthesis became well enough understood to permit the genetic modification oforganisms. An impressive amount of new knowledge has emerged from the new technology, but much ofthe promise of20years ago has notyet been fulfilled. In biotechnology, efforts to increase the yields of commercially valuable metabolites have been less successful than ex pected, and when they have succeeded it has often been as much from selective breeding as from new methods. The cell is more complicated than what is presented in the classical teaching of biochemistry, it contains more structure than was dreamed of 20 years ago, and the behaviour ofany systemofenzymes is more elaborate than can be explained in terms ofa single supposedly rate-limiting enzyme. Even if classical enzymology and meta bolism may have seemed rather unfashionable during the rise ofmolecular biology, they remain central to any modification ofthe metabolic behaviour oforganisms. As such modification is essential in much ofbiotechnology and drug development, bio technologists can only ignore these topics at their peril.
