Chapter Seventeen is the winner of the Wiley Outstanding New Management Theory Award. Authors Chris P. Long, Sim B. Sitkin, and Laura B. Cardinal present a theory to explain the drivers of managerial efforts to promote trust, fairness, and control. They theorize how superior-subordinate conflicts stimulate managers’ concerns about managerial legitimacy and subordinate dependability in performing tasks, and hypothesize how managers attempt to address these concerns using trustworthiness-promotion, fairness-promotion, and control activities. This book also contains written summaries of the two keynote addresses that were given at the conference by Roy Suddaby (editor of Academy of Management Review) and Jeffrey Pfeffer (Stanford University), which comprise Chapters Eighteen and Nineteen. Pfeffer argues that the world of organizations has changed in several important ways, including the increasing externalization of employment and the growing use of contingent workers; the changing size distribution of organizations, with a larger proportion of smaller organizations; the increasing influence of external capital markets on organizational decision-making and a concomitant decrease in managerial autonomy; and increasing salary inequality within organizations in the US compared both to the past and to other industrialized nations. These changes and their public policy implications make it especially important to understand organizations as social entities. But Pfeffer questions whether the research literature of organization studies has either addressed these changes and their causes or made much of a contribution to the discussion of public policy.

Paradox — the simultaneous existence of two inconsistent states — has become orthodox. The orthodox is now the paradox. The orthodox world of ordering, controlling and organizing is increasingly opposed to a normalizing world of disordering, disrupting and disorganizing. Affect and Emotion includes a variety of chapters by some of the most prominent scholars in the area of emotions and leadership, as well as chapters by rising stars. These chapters chart the direction of future research in affect and leadership in four main areas. First, several of these chapters make a convincing argument that leaders use emotional labor and other forms of emotional displays to influence followers and team members. Leaders may use emotional labor to manage relational identities, or to create favorable impressions on followers and to create trust. Leaders' active emotional displays increase vision related performance and perception of transformational leadership. Second, one chapter reveals how emotions play an important role in leadership at every level, from within-person to organization-wide leadership. Leader's emotional labor plays an important role in several of these levels, with the exact method of performing emotional labor varying by level. A second chapter also examines levels of leadership, with a particular examination of the effects of leader emotional labor on close and distant leadership. Third, several of the chapters examine emotions from the authentic leadership and positive leadership perspectives, and two of these chapters focus on how psychological capital and authentic leadership skills help leaders be resilient and overcome obstacles. Fourth, two of the chapters show the role of affect and friendship ties to leadership research. One of these chapters examines the need to develop psychometrically sound measures of affect and friendship, whereas the other develops a model of how affect influences social network ties and informal leadership emergence. Taken together, these chapters illustrate four important research trends in emotions and leadership that are likely to grow in importance in the coming years.

We are now entering a new phase in the establishment of historical organization studies as a distinctive methodological paradigm within the broad field of organization studies.
