This comprehensive atlas depicts the entire range of normal variants seen on neuroradiologic images, helping radiologists "decode" appearances that can be misdiagnosed as pathology. The book features nearly 900 radiographs that show normal variants seen on plain film, MR, CT, and angiographic images, plus accompanying line drawings that demonstrate normal angiogram patterns and other pertinent anatomy.Dr. Jinkins, a well-known neuroradiologist, takes a multimodality approach to the cranium, sella, orbit, face, sinuses, neck, and spine. In an easy-to-follow format, he provides the information radiologists need to identify unusual features...assess their significance...avoid unnecessary, expensive studies...and minimize exposure and risk.

Despite all recent advances, the most important progress in neuroradiol ogy has been in our knowledge of the anatomy of the nervous system. DANDY'S injection of ventricles and cisterns with air, SICARD'S studies of the epidural and subarachoid space with lipiodol, MONIZ'S work on cerebral arteries and veins, and, more recently, DJINDJIAN'S and DI CHIRO'S investiga tions of spinal arteries, have modified, refined and expanded current knowl edge of anatomy of the central nervous system. As described by LINDGREN, "the neuroradiologist dissects the region of interest with x-rays like a surgeon with a scalpel". In fact, neuroradiologic examination is nothing less than an anatomic survey in vivo, using multiple orthogonal projections. The authors of this book are convinced that frequent reference to normal anatomy is currently the most useful and rewarding means of understanding neuroradiologic problems. Arteries and veins of the brain may be considered in terms of the sulci, gyri, cisterns, ventricles, basal nuclei, and cortical centers. In this book, efforts have been made to match anatomic elements of the ventricles, cisterns, and vessels to the region being studied. The foundation of this book lies in the detailed anatomico-radiologic corre lations, demonstrated by numerous photographs of dissected specimens, radiographs of injected specimens, anatomic drawings, diagrams, and normal cerebral angiograms and encephalograms. Indeed, there is no region in the central nervous system which cannot be delineated by its relationships with arteries, veins, cisterns, and ventricles.

This case-based book presents detailed information on neurovascular anatomy in concise, easily digestible chapters that focus on the importance of understanding anatomy when performing neurointerventional procedures. The case discussions include modern examples of invasive and non-invasive angiographic techniques that are relevant for general radiologists and diagnostic neuroradiologists as well as interventionalists. This book gives readers the detailed knowledge of neurovascular anatomy that allows them to anticipate and avoid potential complications. All neuroradiologists, interventionalists, general radiologists, and diagnostic neuroradiologists, as well as residents and fellows in these specialties, will read this book cover to cover and frequently consult it for a quick review before performing procedures.

This book combines classic MR anatomy with current understanding of human brain function. Recent advances in neuroscience have highlighted the importance of correlating brain anatomy with underlying brain function, since the brain contains a highly sophisticated organization of anatomical and functional relationships that are not readily “visible” with standard imaging. The use of magnetic resonance imaging is rapidly increasing in the field of neuroscience, and remains at the forefront for offering insights into the normal and pathologic structure and function of the human brain. The relatively recent concepts of structural and functional connectivity make it even more important to visualize the brain as a whole rather than looking at its individual parts. This holistic approach is vital in understanding concepts such as neuroplasticity that are currently incorporated into physical and cognitive rehabilitation programs for patients with stroke or neurodegenerative diseases. Ultimately this combined approach may reduce both overdiagnosis and misdiagnosis when integrated into routine clinical routine. This book will be of interest to neuroradiologists, general radiologists and neurologists alike, as well as medical students, residents and fellows.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a new and still rapidly developing imaging technique which requires a new approach to image interpreta tion. Radiologists are compelled to translate their experience accumulat ed from X-ray techniques into the language of MRI, and likewise stu dents of radiology and interested clinicians need special training in both languages. Out of this necessity emerged the concept of this book as a manual on the application and evaluation of proton MRI for the radiolo gist and as a guide for the referring physician who wants to learn about the diagnostic value of MRI in specific conditions. After a short section on the basic principles of MRI, the contrast mechanisms of present-day imaging techniques, knowledge of which is essential for the analysis of relaxation times, are described in greater de tail. This is followed by a demonstration of functional neuroanatomy us ing three-dimensional view of MR images and a synopsis of frequent neurological symptoms and their topographic correlations, which will fa cilitate examination strategy with respect to both accurate diagnosis and economy.
