Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: gut, University of Cologne (Anglistik), course: Myth and History in the Writing of Indian Novelists in English, 12 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: "The Thousand Faces of Night" is not just a womanist novel but it is a definite feminist writing in which myths are revisioned, rewritten, and retold from a female point of view. The focus of the novel is on the inner lifes of women, the 'inner spaces' are reflected in detail. The analysis on hand sets its central focus on the relation between myth or stories and the women in the Novel. It presents how the female point of view differs from the male discourse, especially by contrasting myths form the Mahabharata with stories from the Sanskrit. A brief explanation about Manu is included, as well as a rudimentary interpretation of Gita Hariharan's use of metaphors are included.

I have gone through Dr. Rajesh Latane and Dr. Shehjad Sidiquii book entitled, “Feminist Perspective in Githa Hariharan’s Novels”, the book consisted Seventh Chapters the first chapter presents. The rise and development of feminism has been sharply focused. Further, a brief profile of life and works of Githa Hariharan is also put forth. A round-up review of major novels crafted by Githa Hariharan is neatly presented. Besides, literary influence on Githa Hariharan has also been given. Second to sixth chapters writer deal with the feminist perspective of Githa Hariharan novels like in “The Thousand Faces of Night”, “The Ghosts of Vasu Master”, “When Dreams Travel”, “In Times of Siege” and “Fugitive Histories”. The author has also significantly pointed out Githa Hariharan’s use of myth, fable, parable, fantasy, tradition, modernity, etc. as fictional techniques in an effective way. Besides, the novelist’s discussion on “Women’s Issues” is vividly presented through the technique of third person narration. The book has really presented the novelist’s works affected by the “otherness” and “opposition”. The study also investigates Githa Hariharan’s use of meta-fiction, inter-text and magic realism – unique features of post-colonial novel just to bring the feminist discourse in the forefront. The literary canon implies the evaluation or estimation of certain literary texts as the most important during a particular time. The canon is not merely a set of texts; it is a set of standards, evaluative procedures and values. Belonging to a canon confers a guarantee of literary greatness. A canon is formed, by a particular group, to channelize cultural hegemony over others, or, can be constructed, by a governed group, to bring about cultural symmetry. The rise of diverse literatures in English in different parts of the world after the colonial rule of England was the consequence of an urge to articulate a cultural equilibrium or an urge to strike back. The process of canon formation is also a focused and bigoted act, and is always carried out to accomplish certain self-centred objectives. It is commonly accepted that canon formation is executed to accomplish or naturalize certain ideological functions. In the sphere of Indian English literature, Indian English fiction after the end of the 1980s has emerged as a new “canon”. This book looks into the process of literary canon formation in Indian universities, and examines such fiction as an alternative literary canon and as an anti-imperialistic response to the British literary canon. The book ascertains the anti-imperialistic design involved in forming the canon of post-1980 Indian English fiction, examines the gradual emerging trends in such fiction, and discerns the role of language, culture, and native ethos in the formation of a canon.
