“My Special Angel, Miss Beverly Ann Brown,” is a story celebrating the life of a person who was born in 1962 and diagnosed at birth as a “Mongoloid,” later known as Down’s syndrome. At that time many “mentally retarded” persons as they were referred to, were institutionalized at birth or kept at home as “closet children.” Because they were believed to be unteachable, there were no schools or vocational workshops to even try to teach them. Change was coming and I believe that God’s purpose for Beverly on earth was to be a part of that change of the attitude toward and the mistreatment and neglect of the mentally challenged. Even at a young age, Beverly was a blessing spreading God’s love with her hugs to everyone she met. Through her experiences on her life’s journey and her desire for independence, this red-haired, energetic, beautiful lady was instrumental in helping to pave the way for other mentally challenged persons. At age fifty-five, when Beverly had fulfilled her mission and purpose on earth, God called her home.

Most children have heard or read about angels. It is this authors vision to give each child their own special angel for each month. Just like snowflakes, no two angels are alike. Each child can individualize the angel by coloring in their faces and hair and naming their own angel. The angel for each month shares its own special message. Children will not only learn the months of the year, but colors too, and what activity takes place in each month.

This book is a heavenly inspiration on angels. It consists of two parts, the first part contains poems about angels and the second part contains part of my life story, my encounter with the angels and God himself. This special book has poems that are very emotional as well as poems that are funny. It was written with words that came from the deepest part of my inner heart, soul and mind. Most poems are followed by colored picture representation. It's a book that can make you laugh and cry at the same time through the sensitivity and humorous foundation of my poetry.

Explores the rich history of angels in America from Spanish colonialism and Puritan culture to modern incarnations found on TV, in movies, in comic books, and on bumper stickers. Finds that Americans have constructed the "useful angel" as a servant of man rather than an agent of God.
