In the pantheon of air power spokesmen, Giulio Douhet holds center stage. His writings, more often cited than perhaps actually read, appear as excerpts and aphorisms in the writings of numerous other air power spokesmen, advocates-and critics. Though a highly controversial figure, the very controversy that surrounds him offers to us a testimonial of the value and depth of his work, and the need for airmen today to become familiar with his thought. The progressive development of air power to the point where, today, it is more correct to refer to aerospace power has not outdated the notions of Douhet in the slightest In fact, in many ways, the kinds of technological capabilities that we enjoy as a global air power provider attest to the breadth of his vision. Douhet, together with Hugh “Boom” Trenchard of Great Britain and William “Billy” Mitchell of the United States, is justly recognized as one of the three great spokesmen of the early air power era. This reprint is offered in the spirit of continuing the dialogue that Douhet himself so perceptively began with the first edition of this book, published in 1921. Readers may well find much that they disagree with in this book, but also much that is of enduring value. The vital necessity of Douhet’s central vision-that command of the air is all important in modern warfare-has been proven throughout the history of wars in this century, from the fighting over the Somme to the air war over Kuwait and Iraq.

“Required reading for anyone who’s interested in the truth.” —Robert Reich In a post-Trumpian world where COVID rates soar and Americans wage near–civil war about election results, Deborah Stone’s Counting promises to transform how we think about numbers. Contrary to what you learned in kindergarten, counting is more art than arithmetic. In fact, numbers are just as much creatures of the human imagination as poetry and painting; the simplest tally starts with judgments about what counts. In a nation whose Constitution originally counted a slave as three-fifths of a person and where algorithms disproportionately consign Black Americans to prison, it is now more important than ever to understand how numbers can be both weapons of the powerful and tools of resistance. With her “signature brilliance” (Robert Kuttner), eminent political scientist Deborah Stone delivers a “mild-altering” work (Jacob Hacker) that shows “how being in thrall to numbers is misguided and dangerous” (New York Times Book Review).

This book is about our deployment as C-130 Air Force Reserve aircrew. We were called to active duty that was entering into combat for the first time, not knowing what lay ahead of us. We knew that the Lockheed C-130 was and is the best airplane for our mission and that no matter what, it wouldn’t fail us. Crew #3, from start to finish, each one of you had significant input in order for our crew to survive during our hundreds of hours of combat flight time. This is something that was not only expected of each of us but was something each of us knew we could count on from one another. This is also dedicated to all our fellow C-130 aircrews of past, present, and future and to the instructors who taught us how to handle critical situations in and out of combat well. Without your skills and knowledge, we as crew members would not be able to accomplish the delicate and dangerous missions put on us. Your leadership, personalities, and instruction will always be remembered. Know that we understand your direction and teaching of each phase of instruction you put us through. This is dedicated to Lockheed Martin for creating such a magnificent airplane. Your knowledge, experience and passion to not only help, but want to build an unbelievable airplane is great. We as crew members thank you for continuing to better our safety of flight!
