Musical Worlds in Yogyakarta is an ethnographic account of a vibrant Indonesian city during the turbulent early post-Soeharto years. The book examines musical performance in public contexts ranging from the street and neighbourhood through to commercial venues and state environments such as Yogyakarta's regional parliament, its military institutions, universities and the Sultan's palace. It focuses on the musical tastes and practices of street workers, artists, students and others. From street-corner jam sessions to large-scale concerts, a range of genres emerge that cohere around notions of campursari ("mixed essences") and jalanan ("of the street"). Musical worlds addresses themes of social identity and power, counterpoising Pierre Bourdieu's theories on class, gender and nation with the author's alternative perspectives of inter-group social capital, physicality and grounded cosmopolitanism. The author argues that Yogyakarta is exemplary of how everyday people make use of music to negotiate issues of power and at the same time promote peace and intergroup appreciation in culturally diverse inner-city settings.

The third, final part dicusses how musical performaces at state institutions both serve political ends and, incidently or otherwise, help to promote the appreciation of cultural diversity. By drawing on Bourdieu's theories of class, patriarchy and nationalism, the thesis identifies political dimensions of musical performance in Jogjakarta. It then seeks to show that comprehensive representations of social and musical life need to include issues of power and inequality, and yet not be restricted to them. It identifies cooperation amidst contestation by modifying Bourdieu's concepts into inter-group social capital, musical physicalisation and grounded cosmopolitanism respectively. Beginning with inner-city street workers and ending at the nearby Sultan's Palace, the thesis concludes that 'regional cosmopolitan' musical identities are important bearers of inter-cultural tolerance in Jogjakarta. While focused on a particular time and place, the thesis also concentrates on variables of wide cross-cultural applicability, and thereby attempts to fashion a model of contemporary urban musical life.

This book examines popular culture in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, and the third largest democracy. It provides a full account of the key trends since the collapse of the authoritarian Suharto regime (1998), a time of great change in Indonesian society more generally. It explains how one of the most significant results of the deepening industrialization in Southeast Asia since the 1980s has been the expansion of consumption and new forms of media, and that Indonesia is a prime example of this development. It goes on to show that although the Asian economic crisis in 1997 had immediate and negative impacts on incumbent governments, as well as the socioeconomic life for most people in the region, at the same time popular cultures have been dramatically reinvigorated as never before. It includes analysis of important themes, including political activism and citizenship, gender, class, age and ethnicity.
