Future work will focus on phase resolving simulation of hydrodynamics and morphodynamics, resolving more scales of the flow field and sediment transport which will reduce the model skill dependency to the calibration coefficients. The future work will also incorporate some environmental applications of the CFD-DEM model by simulating olivine particles in the nearshore which are aimed at capturing CO2 in the shallow beach region and transfer that to the deep ocean.

This reference for engineers, and graduate students covers sediment transport and morphodynamics modelling in nearshore environments. It presents the fundamentals required for understanding the physics and for setting up numerical models. This book covers hydrodynamics of estuarine and coastal environments, properties of seafloor and estuarine composition, and hydroenvironmental interactions; emphasising the inter-relations of small- and large-scale processes, and short- and large-evolution timescales. The focus is, principally, on the application of shallow-water theory, but some surface wave models, and coupling of shallow-water models with surface waves is also discussed to some extent. The guidance on running regional models and the case studies presented are directed to managed realignment, coastal protection, climate change impacts, and offshore renewables. Key features: Gives a balanced review of this rich interdisciplinary area Bridges practical engineering and research Offers both large- and small-scale application Suits graduate students and researchers as well as consulting engineers Vanesa Magar is a senior researcher and associate professor at the Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada (CICESE) in Baja California, Mexico. She was formerly a researcher and then a lecturer at Plymouth University, UK.

This thesis has been devoted to three different problems related to the morphodynamics of rivers. The first of them concerns sediment transport, for which a two-phase flow model has been proposed, valid in both viscous and turbulent regimes. As a main result, this model describes the transition from bed load to suspended load when the Shields number is increased. The second subject was the formation of bars. We revisited the linear stability analysis of these bedforms in order to emphasize the role played by the saturation length. We have shown that this saturation length controls the transition from ripples to bars. The third and most developed aspect of this PhD work was dedicated to the formation of meanders. By means of 3D RANS equations, we have performed a detailed description of hydrodynamics in a channel with both modulated bed and undulating banks. Coupled to sediment transport, the linear stability analysis of the problem gives predictions for the growth rate, the migration velocity and the shape of the bed for given meandering banks of wavenumber k. These predictions are in quantitative agreement with experimental data we obtained in a small flume: the entire dispersion relation is fitted with reasonable parameters of the modeling, but also the bed modulation is correctly reproduced. On the qualitative sicle, we have identified the mechanism responsible for this instability. This mechanism is different to thàt proposed by Einstein and it is also different to the resonance proposed by Blondeaux & Seminara. Finally, we have shown that depth-averaged (Saint-Venant) equations are not able to reproduce the instability.

Inlets and river mouths are among the most important coastal zones in terms of their economic, ecological and societal values. However, our current predictive capability on the hydrodynamics, sediment delivery and morphological evolution of inlets and river mouths remains qualitative. The overarching goal of this study is to enhance the physical understanding and model development of inlet/river mouth dynamics. The newly developed nearshore circulation model, SHORECIRC, using a hybrid finite-difference finite-volume TVD-type scheme, is coupled with the wave model SWAN and several sediment transport model. This new nearshore modeling system is called NearCoM-TVD. The capability and limitation of NearCoM-TVD for several coastal applications, including tidal inlet hydrodynamics, nearshore wave-current interaction and sandbar migration are evaluated.

Sediment transport is a book that covers a wide variety of subject matters. It combines the personal and professional experience of the authors on solid particles transport and related problems, whose expertise is focused in aqueous systems and in laboratory flumes. This includes a series of chapters on hydrodynamics and their relationship with sediment transport and morphological development. The different contributions deal with issues such as the sediment transport modeling; sediment dynamics in stream confluence or river diversion, in meandering channels, at interconnected tidal channels system; changes in sediment transport under fine materials, cohesive materials and ice cover; environmental remediation of contaminated fine sediments. This is an invaluable interdisciplinary textbook and an important contribution to the sediment transport field. I strongly recommend this textbook to those in charge of conducting research on engineering issues or wishing to deal with equally important scientific problems.
