More Adventures of Little Mikey is the second in a series of chapter books, featuring Little Mikey and his schoolmates. The first book in the series, The Adventures of Little Mikey, highlighted character traits that improve social emotional learning (SEL). The impetus for creating this series is to provide an additional tool to support parents, teachers, counselors, and other educators as they engage students in social emotional learning, which is regarded by educators as foundational and critical to the academic success of students. More Adventures of Little Mikey continues to illustrate the importance of children displaying strong character traits such as kindness, respect, generosity, fairness, compassion, unselfishness, and self-awareness. At the end of each chapter, there are several questions that encourage children to think more about those character traits. Book Review 1: “Children rarely if ever learn civility, respect, kindness, and compassion from lectures by adults, but children of all ages can and do learn these positive character traits from good examples. And sometimes these good examples can be other children that they get to know in timely and age-appropriate fiction like More Adventures of Little Mikey. In this book, three friends from diverse backgrounds navigate their school year by helping their classmates learn some important life lessons about how to treat others while also learning STEM skills. Independent readers will enjoy this book on their own, and younger readers will enjoy having it read aloud to them by adults. And each chapter offers gentle but very timely lessons for readers of all ages.” -- Dr. Allison Gilmore, former college administrator and educator Book Review 2: “More Adventures of Little Mikey has many different teachable moments that parents can use as talking points with their kids. The reoccurring theme is treating people with respect, no matter the differences, is a much-needed message in today’s society. I like that the examples used are everyday issues that kids face: accepting ownership for their actions; welcoming a new student to their class; and helping others in need. It sparked some conversation ideas for me to have with my daughter.” -- Ms. Latoya Norman, mother Book Review 3: “As a reader, I truly enjoyed diving into More Adventures of Little Mikey, the second installment of the Little Mikey series. As a teacher and public school administrator, I value the message and social-emotional growth of the characters. The relatable characters grow with the reader as they struggle with common problems of today’s children. The social-emotional learning (SEL) elements are an excellent tool for educators and parents to share with the important children in their life. Each chapter is followed by a series of thought-provoking questions that allow children to talk through the complexities of their world. Little Mikey is a boy who makes mistakes but is guided by strong role models who help him grow and develop strong character traits through each learning experience. This engaging book shares tales of relevant issues in a way that is safe for children in both the home and the classroom. More Adventures of Little Mikey would be a great addition to any library and certainly belongs in our SEL toolkit.” -- Ms. Tracy Horne, Elementary School Principal

Little Mikey is 10 years old and lives with his mom, dad, and sister. His full name is Michael Vincent Harris, but many people call him Little Mikey because, in his first-grade class, there were two Mikeys – one big and one little. Since he was smaller than Big Mikey, his friends started calling him Little Mikey and the other Mikey, Big Mikey. Nearly every day, whether at school, at home, or at play, Little Mikey seems to get himself into some type of mischief or trouble. The mischief and trouble he gets into doesn’t cause anyone to get hurt. He never bullies anyone. He never uses foul language. And he never uses violence to solve problems. But he makes decisions that sometimes cause him to get into trouble with his parents and teachers. When Little Mikey makes a mistake and finds himself in trouble, he knows to follow three steps: 1. Admit that he made the mistake. 2. Apologize. 3. Promise to try not to make the same mistake again. Each school day, his teachers, counselors, and principals remind him and the other kids of those three important steps, which are not intended to punish. Instead, they are intended to help them to become better at resolving conflict and making learning more fun and exciting. Join Little Mikey, his family, and his best friend, Ricardo, in a series of stories about Little Mikey’s daily adventures as a 10-year old kid. Some of the stories will make you laugh and cause you to think that Little Mikey is a really cool kid. When one of his mistakes makes him feel sad, you might even feel sorry for him. Some of the stories might make you ask: What would I have done if I were Little Mikey? Why did Little Mikey do that? What could Little Mikey have done to avoid getting into trouble and mischief?

The earliest known prison memoir by an African American writer—recently discovered and authenticated by a team of Yale scholars—sheds light on the longstanding connection between race and incarceration in America. “[A] harrowing [portrait] of life behind bars . . . part confession, part jeremiad, part lamentation, part picaresque novel (reminiscent, at times, of Dickens and Defoe).”—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE In 2009, scholars at Yale University came across a startling manuscript: the memoir of Austin Reed, a free black man born in the 1820s who spent most of his early life ricocheting between forced labor in prison and forced labor as an indentured servant. Lost for more than one hundred and fifty years, the handwritten document is the first known prison memoir written by an African American. Corroborated by prison records and other documentary sources, Reed’s text gives a gripping first-person account of an antebellum Northern life lived outside slavery that nonetheless bore, in its day-to-day details, unsettling resemblances to that very institution. Now, for the first time, we can hear Austin Reed’s story as he meant to tell it. He was born to a middle-class black family in the boomtown of Rochester, New York, but when his father died, his mother struggled to make ends meet. Still a child, Reed was placed as an indentured servant to a nearby family of white farmers near Rochester. He was caught attempting to set fire to a building and sentenced to ten years at Manhattan’s brutal House of Refuge, an early juvenile reformatory that would soon become known for beatings and forced labor. Seven years later, Reed found himself at New York’s infamous Auburn State Prison. It was there that he finished writing this memoir, which explores America’s first reformatory and first industrial prison from an inmate’s point of view, recalling the great cruelties and kindnesses he experienced in those places and excavating patterns of racial segregation, exploitation, and bondage that extended beyond the boundaries of the slaveholding South, into free New York. Accompanied by fascinating historical documents (including a series of poignant letters written by Reed near the end of his life), The Life and the Adventures of a Haunted Convict is a work of uncommon beauty that tells a story of nineteenth-century racism, violence, labor, and captivity in a proud, defiant voice. Reed’s memoir illuminates his own life and times—as well as ours today. Praise for The Life and the Adventures of a Haunted Convict “One of the most fascinating and important memoirs ever produced in the United States.”—Annette Gordon-Reed, The Washington Post “Remarkable . . . triumphantly defiant . . . The book’s greatest value lies in the gap it fills.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “Reed displays virtuosic gifts for narrative that, a century and a half later, earn and hold the reader’s ear.”—Thomas Chatterton Williams, San Francisco Chronicle “[The book’s] urgency and relevance remain undiminished. . . . This exemplary edition recovers history without permanently trapping it in one interpretation.”—The Guardian “A sensational, novelistic telling of an eventful life.”—The Paris Review “Vivid and painful.”—NPR “Lyrical and graceful in one sentence, burning with fury and hellfire in the next.”—Columbus Free Press
