In Wolf Moon Blood Moon, Ed Falco considers love and the loss of love, what we have today and what we remember of yesterday, the promise of youth and the disappointments and pleasures of aging. By turns whimsical, meditative, and poignant, these poems examine the joys and sorrows of living. The first section offers a meditation on loss, as the author explores bereavements both personal and remote. From an elderly mother and her stroke-impaired son struggling to have a simple conversation, to a man coping with the breakup of his marriage, to strangers caught in the public tragedies of a flood or an act of mass violence, these are poems acknowledging that loss is inevitable, infused with grief, and borne with courage. The second section explores the turbulence, sensuality, and mysteries within a particular life. Speakers in these poems contemplate aging while on their way to see a Broadway play, recall a father’s violence and a mother’s selflessness, and explore the complexity of a world that seems impossible to comprehend. Together, the two sections suggest a poet looking back in contemplation.

What happens to amusement park rides once they are put into storage or destroyed? They are magically transported to a place known as Amusement Park Between, a park that coexists within any other and is only accessible by those who are of its blood. There are no limits and no humans. The only residents are the rides. However, they are much different from our kind. Amusement Park Betweens rides are alive, having both the characteristics of man and beast. Amusement Park Between was once merry and joyous, but for the past several years, it has spiraled into turmoil. An evil tyrant known as Ironwheel has taken control, casting a dark shadow over Amusement Park Between, his evil intentions endangering both their world and our own. The rides only hope is the key to their prophecy: the red will defeat the black. That particular key is the only ride that was created differently: Railrunner, the red roller coaster. This is his story.

The novel is set in the twenty-third century and is a satire that gets quite politically bigoted for the sake of amusement. A fleet of space vessels are detected by Earths tracking stations as they enter the outer reaches of the solar system. Messages of greeting are met with silence, and after several attempts, it is presumed that they constitute an invasion force. Several world powers have nuclear capabilities, and after a meeting on a global level, it is decided to attack the ships that are growing ever nearer before they can accomplish their mission. The strike is totally successful, and the threatened hysteria dies down. Then a second wave of vessels, exactly as the first are detected, once again ignored every message of enquiry of intent that Earth has sent them. Further warheads are sent to destroy them with total success just as before. It seems that the vessels have no conventional weapons and are unable to defend themselves. While on Earth, looting, murder, and other crimes is rampant during the hysteria. One man, Hakt, begins digging in his backyard to create an underground shelter. He feels certain the end of civilisation is upon them. The first few chapters deal with his experiences, especially when a third wave of craft are detected on their way to Earth. As the various powers all maintaining their nuclear arsenal is exhausted, the ships arrive unmolested. One lands in the Gambia, while the others land on the far side of the moon. A united nation squabbles over who will go to greet the lone vessel. Once the argument subsides, a deputation does indeed approach. A gas is released from the ship, and those it lands on are dissolved to nothing more than grey residue. Not only that; the ships also bathe every conflict theatre currently undergoing war on the whole planet! The tacit aliens have brought peace to Earth, but at what cost?

This book is published on the occasion of a major survey of Viola's work organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, which has traveled to Los Angeles and Amsterdam and which arrives in Frankfurt in Spring 1999. Through contributions by over 30 authors from many different disciplines the Editor offers for the first time an interpretive framework which draws on the aesthetic consideration of each individual work, and thus sheds new light on the complexity of Viola's entire ceuvre. In his introduction Rolf Lauter presents an overview of the installations and videos and draws out the "elective affinities" between the many different pieces.
