The medicated steam, a 'mixture of compound tincture of benzoin, is inhaled at a tempera ture of from 140° to 170° F. For about fifteen minutes. This is followed by inhalations of oily substances without the aid of heat, either of the two following being used. Excerpt from Monthly Cyclopedia and Medical Bulletin (Consolidated), Vol. 28: September, 1914; New Series, Vol. 17 Conception has seemed, at least in the writer's practice, to be greatly facilitated by hyperthyroidism. He has not observed a case of exophthalmic goiter in which, pregnancy being possible, it did not occur quickly and repeatedly. The use of thyroid gland in the obese also favors pregnancy, as previously noted by Montgomery. In 1 of the writer's own cases, a woman of 240 pounds, whom thyroid gland had reduced to 200 pounds, conception occurred, though eleven years of married life had proven sterile. A normal pregnancy and labor followed. How is one to explain this phenomenon? The thyroid gland enlarges during menstruation. Lange found it enlarged during the fifth and sixth months of pregnancy. The anterior lobe of the pituitary gland is known also to enlarge during pregnancy, and this is said to account for skeletal and other tissue growth observed during gestation. Greater oxidation in the tissues must be effected; hence the increased activity of the adrenal system i.a., of the pituitary, thyroid, and adrenals. Manifestly, it is the general vital functions that are enhanced under the in uence of the overactive thy roid gland of hyperthyroidism, and the reproductive apparatus takes part in this enhanced activity.
