In my perplexity I turn back to the West which We are leaving, and I need no further ex planation. The revelation is made to me. The sun has gone down but left the traces of his bright golden glory behind him, and there between the two headlands which form the pillars (themselves gilt by the brightness all around them) we see only one blaze of rich golden light from side to side. It is well called the Golden Gate. A turn in our course presently shuts out this brightness from our view, and we discern in the dull light a number of vessels anchored in what seems and is, in fact, an immense anchorage ground. We tread our way cautiously amongst them, and, finally landed at Broadway Wharf, we are taken possession of by the employees of the Palace Hotel, San Francisco, and within its hospitable portals we speedily find ourselves.
