Mother's transform into Cancer Warriors when they're battling cancer, this rhythmic picture book gives them an open forum to introduce the topic of cancer to they're young children in an empowering yet spirited way! Author Alex Blount was inspired to write and illustrate her debut picture book based on her own cancer scare journey and reflections of being 10 years old when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. It's rhythmic patterns naturally sooth fears, and helps with retention in young children of the things that they can do to help. The Story In Mommy is a Cancer Warrior! the little girl in this story has just found out that her mother was diagnosed with cancer, and is experiencing many different confusing emotions. Who better to discuss her feelings, emotions, questions and concerns better than her mother? As the mother consoles her child, she makes a decision to join an elite special crew of women that fight cancer everyday; called Cancer Warriors! The mother explains about many of the potential obstacles that may come her way; like hair loss, surgery and even the possibility of death from an upbeat perspective of a strong warrior. The conversation is open and honest and they discuss new cancer key terms, like radiation and chemotherapy. There is a theme of transformation throughout the book. In the end, the mother becomes a self- assured cancer warrior and the daughter has the tools to help. With its rhythmic patterned text and Wakanda inspired illustrations, Mommy is a Cancer Warrior! is relatable to any type of cancer. Diversity Matters Lastly, representation matters. It is important now more then ever for young Black children to be able to see themselves and their personal heroes and heroines in stories. Even though cancer affects everyone from everywhere, there are so few books targeted towards young Black children. This book looks to change that.
