The pursuit of sexual equality has characterised the post-WWII years of the twentieth century. During this time, there have been three significant phases which have affected the development of feminist theory: the pre-modern, which is characterised by fixed order, roles and explanations reinforced by accepted tradition, the modern, associated with the 1960s and 70s when the consequences of biological determinism were rejected and the agenda moved to the way society was structured and the roles that resulted; the postmodern of the 1990s onwards when women were encouraged to discover their own subjectivity, and construct those experiences into something that is appropriate for them.
