Infectious diseases are the leading cause of death globally, particularly among children and young adults. The spread of new pathogens and the threat of antimicrobial resistance pose particular challenges in combating these diseases. This book discusses systematically treatment on the development of stochastic, statistical and state space models of the HIV epidemic and of HIV pathogenesis in HIV-infected individuals, and presents the applications of these models. The book is unique in several ways: (1) it uses stochastic difference and differential equations to present the stochastic models of the HIV epidemic and HIV pathogenesis; in this sense, the deterministic models are considered as special cases when the numbers of different type of people or cells are very large (2) it provides, a critical analysis of deterministic and statistical models in the literature; (3) it develops state space models by combining stochastic models and statistical models; and (4) it provides a detailed discussion on the pros and cons of the different modeling approaches. This book is the first to introduce state space models for the HIV epidemic. It is also the first to develop stochastic models and state space models for the HIV pathogenesis in HIV-infected individuals.

The disease that came to be called acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was first identified in the summer of 1981. By that time, nearly 100,000 persons in the United States may have been infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). By the time the routes of transmission were clearly identified and HIV was established as the cause of AIDS in 1983, over 300,000 people may have been infected. That number has continued to increase, with approximately 1,000,000 Americans believed to be infected in 1991. The epidemic is of great public health concern because HlV is infectious, causes severe morbidity and death in most if not all of those infected, and often occurs in relatively young persons. In addition, the cost of medical care for a person with HIV disease is high, and the medical care needs of HIV-infected persons place a severe burden on the medical care systems in many areas. Understanding and controlling the HIV epidemic is a particularly difficult challenge. The long and variable period between HIV infection and clinical disease makes it difficult both to forecast the future magnitude of the epidemic, which is important for health care planning, and to estimate the number infected in the last several years, which is important for monitoring the current status of the epidemic.

AIDS has appeared in more than 130 countries, and over 100,000 cases of AIDS have been reported in the U.S. alone. More and more, the public will be depending on statisticians to provide answers about the future course of this epidemic. This comprehensive work confronts the problems that are unique to AIDS research and unites them under a single conceptual framework. It focuses on methods for the design and analysis of epidemiologic studies, the natural history of AIDS and the transmission of HIV, methods for tracking and projecting the course of the epidemic, and statistical issues in therapeutic trials. The various methods of monitoring and forecasting this disease receive comprehensive treatment. These methods include back-calculation, which the authors developed; interpretation of survey data on HIV prevalence; mathematical models for HIV transmission; and approaches that combine different types of epidemiological data. Much of this material -- such as a discussion of methods for assessing safety of the blood supply, an evaluation of survey approaches, and methods to project pediatric AIDS incidence -- is not available in any other work.

HIV/AIDS is nowadays considered as the greatest public health disaster of modern time. Its progression has challenged the global population for decades. Through mathematical modelling, researchers have studied different interventions on the HIV pandemic, such as treatment, education, condom use, ctc. Our research focuses on different compartmental models with emphasis on the effect of public health education. From the point of view of statistics, it is well known how the public health educational programs contribute towards the reduction of the spread of HIV/AIDS epidemic. Many models have been studied towards understanding the dynamics of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The impact of ARV treatment have been observed and analysed by many researchers. Our research studies and investigates a compartinental model of HIV with treatment and education campaign.
