Excerpt from Missionary Messages As indicated by the title, this book is, for the most part, composed of missionary messages which have been delivered by the author on various occasions. They are issued in the present form for the single purpose that they were at first delivered orally, namely, to quicken interest in Foreign Missions. In the main they have to do with Foreign Missions as a common Christian enterprise, but at points they deal specifically with the Baptist foreign mission program. There was in the delivery and there is here no disposition to evade the distinctive views and policies which characterize Southern Baptists and control their foreign mission work. An effort has been made to state the denominational viewpoint as inoffensively as frankly, and to use this to strengthen the foreign mission motive. No man ought to hold a religious opinion or alliance of which he is ashamed. Neither should one state his personal or denominational views in irreligious spirit or manner. Thoughtful men will agree that the only certain course to better understanding, mutual respect and concord among the Christian forces which are engaged In this commanding world enterprise of Foreign Missions is for each group to state with proper Christian decorum those views and principles which it holds and would have obtain in the conduct of the work and thus allow others to examine these on their merit. Respect of one Christian denomination for another will be promoted and that Christian unity, about which so much is said in foreign mission circles, will be the more certainly realized by clear and frank confession rather than by sentimental slurring of the comparatively few points of difference between the evangelical forces of Christendom. Excerpt from The Bible a Missionary Message a Study of Activities and Methods The author accepted the invitation of his friend, Professor Chas. T. Ball, General Secretary of the Baptist Student Missionary Movement [later designated American Baptist Student Union], to prepare this book on the missionary message of the Bible for use in schools, colleges, universities, theological seminaries, and for general reading. Two other studies of the teaching of the Bible concerning Missions have been prepared by the same author. Missions in the Plan of the Ages is an extended study for use in classes of seminaries and training schools and by others who wish to make a full study of the subject. It has been in growing use for twelve years. Four years ago All the World in All the Word was prepared at the special request of the Women's Missionary Union Auxiliary to the Southern Baptist Convention for use in their numerous study classes. Although extensively used by those for whom they were prepared, neither of these seemed wholly adapted to the uses of the Missionary Movement. There has been no effort to avoid use of the same material in the different volumes. There has been diligent effort to adapt the use in each case to the constituency for whom it was prepared. Excerpt from Visions for Missionaries and Others This is simply a collection of Scripture Messages published in the Mission Field between 1906 and 1909, a previous volume having been published with the above title. The office I hold bids me enter daily into the trials and joys of many persons in many lands, all engaged in one work. And I have attempted, in some of the following pages, to expound Scripture through the medium of human lives as they prove by experience the truth of the written Word. It may be that here and there heart may answer to heart, albeit my characters are all of them creatures of imagination: yet none the less I. Excerpt from Letters to a Missionary It seems desirable to explain the circumstances under which the following Letters came to be written. Early in 1917 I received a circular letter from the Rev. Stanley P. Smith, a missionary stationed at Tsehchowfu, in the south-east of the Chinese province of Shansi. In this letter Mr. Smith states that as long ago as 1885 he became the leader of a small party of young men (known as "the Cambridge Seven") who decided to devote their lives to missionary work in China. For seventeen years Mr. Smith worked in connexion with the well-known society known as the China Inland Mission, and then (about the year 1902) was asked to retire from the Mission owing to his "views on eschatology" - in other words, his refusal to believe in an everlasting hell. According to Mr. Smith's own belief, "eternal punishment" is an undoubted truth, because clearly taught in the Bible; he denies, however, that the term translated by the word "eternal" necessarily means "everlasting."
