Published in 1853, this collection of writings by William Jay provides a powerful condemnation of the institution of slavery in the United States. Jay was a lawyer and abolitionist who worked alongside figures such as William Wilberforce and John Quincy Adams to end slavery. In this text, he presents a range of arguments against slavery, including appeals to morality and religion, and demonstrating the economic and political costs of the practice. Excerpt from Slavery The first question to be proposed by a rational being is, not what is profitable, but what is Right. Duty must be primary, prominent, most conspicuous, among the objects of human thought and pursuit. If we cast it down from its supremacy, if we inquire first for our interests, and then for our duties, we shall certainly err. We can never see the Right clearly and fully, but by making it our first concern. No judgment can be just or wise, but that which is built on the conviction of the paramount worth and importance of Duty. This is the fundamental truth, the supreme law of reason; and the mind, which does not start from this in its inquiries into human affairs, is doomed to great, perhaps fatal error. The Right is the supreme good, and includes all other goods. In seeking and adhering to it, we secure our true and only happiness. All prosperity, not founded on it, is built on sand. Excerpt from On Slavery Is it not plain that there is a providence in all this? We have a duty to perform, we are loaded with responsibility for our enslaved brethren, as well as for our kindred who hold slaves, and so Heaven has righteously decreed that we shall think and act upon it. Truly, we ought not to avoid the subject. It is unworthy of Americans to shrink from inquiry as to our condition, our prospects, and our duty. Let us meet the subject like men. Truth will not harm us certainly not if we obey it. Shame on the man who thinks or admits that the free institutions in which we glory, cannot stand the test of truth and free inquiry. What is a slave? A slave is a person held in slavery. We are never to forget that the slaves are human beings. Their black complexion and degraded condition often incline us to overlook this fact. We talk about the African race, but the slaves are of the human race. If all other proofs were set aside, the unmistakable evidence that they partake in the consequences of Adams fall, would settle the question. God selected their ancestors as one of the four men who were preserved in Noah's Ark, to repeople the desolated earth, after the deluge, and Jesus Christ came to seek them among the lost sheep for whose salvation he laid down his life. They are our brethren by descent from the same parent, by being found in the same general depravity, and by sharing in the mercy of the same Savior. Excerpt from Dialogue on Slavery: And Miscellaneous Subjects, Based on the Word of God Reader, if you are a student of the Bible and a firm believer in the doctrine therein taught; if it is your determination to take the Word of God for a light to your feet and a lamp to your path; then the author would congratulate you, - for it is just in proportion as an individual makes the law of Heaven the man of his counsel that he will be able to understand Truth from Error, Virtue from Vice, and to know that Wisdom's ways are ways of pleasantness and that all her paths are peace. And what does God demand of you, but to love mercy, do justly and walk humbly with Him? Then bear in mind that the beginning of wisdom is God's fear; that the individual who, does not fear his Maker and reverence the Eternal, is unworthy of the name of man; and that sooner or later he will find it hard to kick against the pricks.
