I Stand, I Fall, a comprehensive survey of work by John Miller, coincides with the first American museum exhibition dedicated to the influential conceptual artist. Through almost 150 images, this catalogue comprehensively traces Miller's use of the figure throughout his career in order to incisively comment on the status of art and life in American culture. The book features a range of media, including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, installation and video; never-before-seen works from the 1980s; new large-scale sculptures; and the artist's most ambitious architectural installation to date - a vast and immersive mirrored labyrinth that went on view at the ICA Miami's Atrium Gallery. I Stand, I Fall, surveys Miller's use of the figure in order to examine themes of citizenship and politics, and the conventions of realism in contemporary art. Organized chronologically, the exhibition begins with his drawings and paintings from 1982-1983, the majority of which have never been presented publicly. Influenced by the pastoral genre of painting and American social realism of the 1920s and 30s, these deadpan, even grotesque, works explore issues of urban and suburban Americana, public space, and the human. With his installations, Ugo Rondinone creates personal dreamscapes. In his retrospective exhibition at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the artist presented Vocabulary of Solitude, an arrangement of his works inspired by the color spectrum. Clowns, clocks, candles, shoes, windows, light bulbs and rainbows: they are recognizable images that speak to all of us. These symbols excite free-association and memories. The forty-five clowns with their different postures represent activities of everyday life, at the same time expressing the anguish of human solitude: be, breathe, sleep, dream, wake, rise, sit, hear, look, think, stand, walk, pee, shower, dress, drink, fart, shit, read, laugh, cook, smell, taste, eat, clean, write, daydream, remember, cry, nap, touch, feel, moan, enjoy, float, love, hope, wish, sing, dance, fall, curse, yawn, undress, lie. This is the first of a four-chapter publication series by Ugo Rondinone.

Betye Saar (born 1926) is renowned for pioneering Black feminism and West Coast assemblage in her visionary artistic practice, through dense, complexly referential objects. For over six decades, Saar's work has led dialogues on race and gender, reflecting changing cultural and political contexts. Most recently, solo presentations have been hosted by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Saar's work was prominently featured in We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965-85 at the Brooklyn Museum, New York, and in Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power at Tate Modern, London, which traveled to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas; Brooklyn Museum; The Broad, Los Angeles; and the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

The first monograph on Afro-Cuban artist Tomás Esson. Tomás Esson: The GOAT features paintings created over thirty-five years that showcase the artist's distinct style, energy, and biting humor. Esson is one of Cuba's most important post-Revolutionary artists and his work remains timely today. In Esson's work, suggestive narratives often involve highly sexualized, monstrous creatures alongside the heroes of the Cuban Revolution. Coming of age in a culturally dynamic Havana, Esson was a fierce critic of the social reality he saw around him. His work was showcased in a number of controversial exhibitions in the late 1980s and the artist became a central figure in the decade's renaissance in Cuban art. Esson began to exhibit internationally very early on, and in 1990 he left Cuba and moved to the United States. Alongside images of Esson's works, this publication provides newly commissioned scholarship and reprints of critical texts that are no longer in circulation. This volume includes essays by Erica James and Antonio Eligio Fernandez (Tonel), as well as a new interview with the artist.
