Excerpt from Methods of Measuring Temperature The present volume is written for those concerned with the measurement of temperature, whether in scientific investigations or in the control of industrial operations. Attention has been devoted chiefly to the experimental basis of the methods in general use, the calibration of the instruments, and the precautions which must be observed in practice. While the volume is complete, in itself, it is assumed that the reader is conversant with the fundamental principles of physics, and the aim has been to extend the general treatment given in standard text-books, such as those of Poynting and Thomson. It was not deemed desirable to devote much space to descriptions of the constructional details of pyrometers, since the information is readily accessible in the catalogues of the manufacturers. A connected account is given of the classical researches with the gas thermometer, which have established, in a concrete form, the absolute scale of temperature over the range -200 to 1550 C. And it is well to remember that although the electrical and radiation methods enable "relative" measurements to be made with a high degree of precision, they are dependent on the gas thermometer work for their evaluation in terms of the fundamental scale of temperature. In subsequent chapters the various types of pyrometers are dealt with individually, the theory underlying the method and the calibration of the instrument. An attempt has been made to set out clearly the errors to which pyrometric observations are liable, when the conditions of use do not comply with those postulated by the theory upon which the design is based; particularly in the case of instruments of the "radiation" type. The illustrations have been prepared by Mr. Edgar A. Griffiths, and the writer wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to his brother for his contributions to the work. The descriptions of the apparatus in use at the National Physical Laboratory have been inserted with the kind permission of the Director, Sir Richard Glazebrook. Excerpt from High Temperature Measurement by Electric Means The accurate measurement of high temperatures has come to be a very essential feature of many industrial pro cesses. The pyrometer makes it possible to reproduce with precision any temperature that has been found to yield the best results in Operations requiring careful heat treatment. In the making of tinted glass, for example, the preper regu lation of the temperature of the furnace is necessary to pre vent burning out the color. Instead of depending upon the workman to judge of the condition of the material with his eye, the manufacturer gives instructions to maintain the heat at a certain temperature, knowing then that the output will be of a certain uniform grade. In this manner the variable human element is eliminated and waste prevented. The temper ing of tools, the burning of ceramic products, the Operation of gas producers, the manufacture of iron and steel and the annealing of castings are a few examples of processes that may be carried on to better advantage with the aid of refined methods of measuring high temperatures. The recording pyro meter is rapidly coming into use as an efficient means of eu pervising processes requiring heat treatment. Excerpt from High-Temperature Measurements The measurement Of high temperatures was considered for a long time to be a very difficult operation and Of a very uncertain precision. There were cited with admira tion a half-dozen determinations seeming to merit some confidence. During the last few years the question has made considerable progress, and we possess to-day several sufficiently precise pyrometers whose usage is rapidly spreading among scientific and industrial laboratories. Before describing them, perhaps it will not be useless to indicate the services that they may render to science and to industry, by giving a brief summary Of similar services that they have already rendered. Excerpt from Equipment and Methods for Measurements of Soil Temperature The bimetal dial thermometersfi/ have a coil-within-coil structure about 1 inches long located in the end of a hollow stem. Changes in temperature cause a rotary action of the bimetal helix; this turns a shaft on which a pointer is mounted. The instruments used in this study employed three indicators. One indicated the current temperature, a second the maximum temperature, and a third the minimum temperature. The thermometers can be purchased with different stem lengths for different soil depths. Van Bavel and Forrest (5) concluded that these thermometers were accurate to less than 1° F., were easy to read, and could withstand normal field exposure.
