The research project explores specific meta-dialogue behaviors in terms of both how a system could be made to perform them, and to what extent they can increase overall system performance. We focus on two types of meta-dialogue capabilities: ability to detect and recover from anomalous dialogue patterns in simple exchanges, and on-line extensions or changes to working vocabulary. Our main method involves detailed representation of the dialogue context, separating domain, language, and dialogue specific aspects, and significant amounts of meta-reasoning about the system's processing of these representations. An existing logical inference system, ALMA/CARNE, developed as part of a pilot study, is being used in an implementation phase of this work. We are also engaged in a study of existing dialogue corpora to investigate the range and frequency of meta-dialogue expressions in different task domains.

In this book, a novel approach that combines speech-based emotion recognition with adaptive human-computer dialogue modeling is described. With the robust recognition of emotions from speech signals as their goal, the authors analyze the effectiveness of using a plain emotion recognizer, a speech-emotion recognizer combining speech and emotion recognition, and multiple speech-emotion recognizers at the same time. The semi-stochastic dialogue model employed relates user emotion management to the corresponding dialogue interaction history and allows the device to adapt itself to the context, including altering the stylistic realization of its speech. This comprehensive volume begins by introducing spoken language dialogue systems and providing an overview of human emotions, theories, categorization and emotional speech. It moves on to cover the adaptive semi-stochastic dialogue model and the basic concepts of speech-emotion recognition. Finally, the authors show how speech-emotion recognizers can be optimized, and how an adaptive dialogue manager can be implemented. The book, with its novel methods to perform robust speech-based emotion recognition at low complexity, will be of interest to a variety of readers involved in human-computer interaction.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR AND HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION BASED ON MACHINE LEARNING ALGORITHMS The objective of this book is to provide the most relevant information on Human-Computer Interaction to academics, researchers, and students and for those from industry who wish to know more about the real-time application of user interface design. Human-computer interaction (HCI) is the academic discipline, which most of us think of as UI design, that focuses on how human beings and computers interact at ever-increasing levels of both complexity and simplicity. Because of the importance of the subject, this book aims to provide more relevant information that will be useful to students, academics, and researchers in the industry who wish to know more about its real-time application. In addition to providing content on theory, cognition, design, evaluation, and user diversity, this book also explains the underlying causes of the cognitive, social and organizational problems typically devoted to descriptions of rehabilitation methods for specific cognitive processes. Also described are the new modeling algorithms accessible to cognitive scientists from a variety of different areas. This book is inherently interdisciplinary and contains original research in computing, engineering, artificial intelligence, psychology, linguistics, and social and system organization as applied to the design, implementation, application, analysis, and evaluation of interactive systems. Since machine learning research has already been carried out for a decade in various applications, the new learning approach is mainly used in machine learning-based cognitive applications. Since this will direct the future research of scientists and researchers working in neuroscience, neuroimaging, machine learning-based brain mapping, and modeling, etc., this book highlights the framework of a novel robust method for advanced cross-industry HCI technologies. These implementation strategies and future research directions will meet the design and application requirements of several modern and real-time applications for a long time to come. Audience: A wide range of researchers, industry practitioners, and students will be interested in this book including those in artificial intelligence, machine learning, cognition, computer programming and engineering, as well as social sciences such as psychology and linguistics.

This report presents guidelines for designing human-computer dialogue for tactical operations. Researchers consolidated sources of information into a form intended for use by designers of tactical computer systems to give them a basis to assess the military impact of dialoge design and take leadership in improving the usability of future systems. This report was developed to support dialogue design for two general situations: (1) the generation of specifications for relatively large-scale systems in which the specific design and development will be performed by another, and (2) the development of relatively small-scale special-purpose systems in which the reader will be the designer and developer, perhaps with the aid of a programmer. The user-computer dialogue is clearly the key to developing systems that fit in with user's goals and tasks. Consequently, this guide will emphasize the essence of the dialogue, clarification of fundamental issues, performance of front-end analyses, selection between alternative dialogue types, and testing for usability. This guide will not address (at least to any major degree) the issues of data display, contents of on-line documentation and help, data transmission, hardware devices, or general human engineering considerations. For those interested in reading further, a reading list and a selected bibliography are provided. (Author).
