Paused momentarily in our garden to ponder a monarch butterfly, I began thinking about the word metamorphosis. Now at seventy years, it seemed my whole life had been a metamorphosis. It means change in form. The more I thought about it, the more I realized the wonderful design and the grandeur of which leaves one speechless. That butterfly was created by the Great Designer, our God. Can you see the metamorphosis in your own life? My occupation just didn't happen by chance. My faith in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior was providential ordained, not chance. The greatest metamorphosis in our lives will come at its end, and if one is not a believer in Christ, the mystery will play itself out in eternity. It is my prayer and purpose to labor in the fields ripe for harvest and take you with me when I cross that Jordan River. No one else may be praying for you but having been where you are, we will together journey the metamorphosis of God's world. "Ye must be born again" (John 3:3)!

Just a few moments before his death, my father looked straight ahead and with a calm voice said to me, 'Almost there!' It has been 20 years since his homeward journey and I have been haunted by those words. What was he seeing that we couldn't see? In my career as a surgeon and a witness for Christ, I have observed many deaths when the last moments were calm and unafraid. Four years as a hospice volunteer brought me even more intimate with those last moments. I think that the valley David wrote of could also represent moments of extreme circumstances in our lives when we are in the Shadow of death: an automobile accident with severe injuries, the sudden loss of a child or spouse, the loss of a career, a consuming fire, a devastating flood, the birth of a stillborn. Do you have the Good Shepherd to guide you through these times? We only have this moment, this breath. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone. Do you have the peace of God that surpasses all understanding? Are you ready to walk through the valleys of your life? Come with me as I walk through the valley of the hospice and witness the grace and comfort that only God can provide for us. Journey with me and meet my Lord. There will be stops along the way as we see how the world deals with the valley. I pray that this book might be a life changing experience for you as we journey to 'Almost there.'

This is a story of healing set in the context of a wealthy philanthropist who gathers a dedicated group of Christian faithful to resurrect a dying town by creating a high quality medical center. It is more than the challenges, labor and sacrifice required by this ambitious ten year project. We enter the lives of multiple citizens from this poor and medically underserved area. The rich ebb and flow of their hardships, disappointments, and redemptions is the real meat of the story. Humans, of course, are God's creations, so the reader also finds joy, along with the satisfaction of seeing a main character's hatred and quest for revenge quelled by compassion, reconciliation and love. 1 Corinthians 13:13. — Bill E. The first textbook on the subject, this is a practical, clinically comprehensive guide to ethical issues in surgical practice, research, and education written by some of the most prominent figures in the fields of surgery and bioethics. Discussions of informed consent, confidentiality, and advance directives--core concepts integral to every surgeon-patient relationship--open the volume. Seven chapters tackle the ethical issues in surgical practice, covering the full range of surgical patients--from emergency, acute, high-risk, and elective patients, to poor surgical risk and dying patients. The book even considers the special relationship between the surgeon and patients who are family members or friends. Chapters on surgical research and education address innovation, self-regulation in practice and research, and the prevention of unwarranted bias. Two chapters focus on the multidisciplinary nature of surgery, including the relationships between surgery and other medical specialties and the obligations of the surgeon to other members of the surgical team. The economic dimensions of surgery, especially within managed care, are addressed in chapters on the surgeons financial relationships with patients, conflicts of interest, and relationships with payers and institutions. The authors do not engage in abstract discussions of ethical theory; instead, their discussions are always directly relevant to the everyday concerns of practicing surgeons. This well-integrated volume is intended for practicing surgeons, medical educators, surgical residents, bioethicists, and medical students.
