John Howard Reid is one of this country's greatest natural storytellers... Some critics have likened his works to those of Agatha Christie. I find the comparison a little unfair -- to Mr. Reid. If Reid's work needs comparing, I would liken it to Graham Greene's... Merryll Manning On the Rim of Heaven is one book you will find impossible to put down. - American critic, Richard Deutch, in The Sunday Telegraph. Compulsive reading... An engrossing thriller. -- John Hyde in The West Australian. Solidly real... Fast-moving dramatic action. -- Professor Stephen Knight in The Sydney Morning Herald. A well-constructed novel with a thrilling conclusion. -- Judith Green in Between the Covers. Particularly engrossing and easy to read... The author must be congratulated! -- Neil E. Lomas, editor, Warwick Daily News. Highly original... A worthy successor to Reid's earlier novels. The author shows the same lively imagination, yet gives his plot credibility. -- Leonard Ward in The Canberra Times.

This novel tells a story instigated by a fictitious movie star named Bess Dress Blighty. Bess made the startling discovery that all a woman had to do to attract attention from the nation's press, radio and budding TV, was to take her clothes off. But alas, that action was the sum total of the attention she received. If Bess spoke about the obstacles placed in the paths of career women, or the denial of equal rights and opportunities with men, or drew attention to the plight of women who were deserted by their husbands or lovers and left to raise children on an income of less than zero, nobody gave a damn. But on the other hand, the mere action of taking her clothes off excited frenzied attention from everybody - including the nation's top church leaders, newspaper editors, radio commentators, gossip columnists, TV programmers, and even Washington politicians. Indeed, although the line-up of would-be censors was prodigious, it seems that some bigot was especially envious of Bess's successful efforts.

This account of the Khobar Towers bombing tells the story of the horrific attack and the magnificent response of airmen doing their duty under nearly impossible circumstances. None of them view their actions as heroic, yet the reader will marvel at their calm professionalism. All of them say it was just their job, but the reader will wonder how they could be so well trained to act almost instinctively to do the right thing at the right time. None of them would see their actions as selfless, yet countless numbers refused medical attention until the more seriously injured got treatment. Throughout this book, the themes of duty, commitment, and devotion to comrades resoundingly underscore the notion that America's brightest, bravest, and best wear her uniforms in service to the nation. This book is more than heroic actions, though, for there is also controversy. Were commanders responsible for not adequately protecting their people? What should one make of the several conflicting investigations following the attack? Dr. Jamieson has not shied away from these difficult questions, and others, but has discussed them and other controversial judgments in a straightforward and dispassionate way that will bring them into focus for everyone. It is clear from this book that there is a larger issue than just the response to the bombing. It is the issue of the example set by America's airmen. Future airmen who read this book will be stronger and will stand on the shoulders of those who suffered and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
