Excerpt from Old Memories, Vol. 1: A Novel My mother! What hosts of memories, sad and joyful, start up into life at these two magic words. My mother has been dust these twenty years, but she rises clearly before me now - a tall, stately, handsome lady, generally dressed in black, With a reserved mien and haughty carriage. Why have I no tender or softening memory of her? Why, When I dream of her now, as an old woman, Is she always the same cold _and stately lady that she was in my child ish dreams? That most lovely and tender of all earthly names Mother - was a frigid sound enough in mine and my brother's ears. We never used to run to our mother, to kiss or cling about her - very far indeed, at an im measurable distance, was such a, thought from us. She was a handsome lady, dressed in rust ling silks, 'who used to come sometimes into our nursery, sit down, talk to us for a While. Excerpt from A Childhood I DO not know the author of this book, and I have, as a rule, a strong feeling against books that tell no continuous story. Yet it has interested me greatly, both because of the skill and faithfulness with which the scattered memories are recorded, and because it.somehow reads like the proem to something sterner and sadder. Memories of child hood draw most of their magic from some incom pleteness of this sort. They seem like the random play of eddies in a wide river that will hereafter gather to a cataract, significant because greater things are coming, and pathetic because they give no sign what those greater things will be. The randomness of childhood is well represented here also its sense of a mysterious life in lifeless things, its terrors and its heartlessness and the eternal mockery of the poor grown-ups in the back ground, vexing their hearts with love and care for the children, and succeeding only in becoming a well-recognized nuisance, useful as a protection against still greater calamities, though always checking and marring the current of true life. Excerpt from Treasured Memories for Little Children I have been thinking for a long time of telling you some, for I remember when I was a very little child how happy I was when I could put my little chair close to my own dear mother's, and listen to them from her lips. Those were happy days, when I could scarce contain myself for joy: but many a long and weary hour has passed since, and now I feel, at times, as if it were all a dream, and as if I had never known a mother. Excerpt from Recollections of Childhood: Or, Sally, the Faithful Nurse A very simple introduction may possibly suffice for a very simple volume. I have aimed at nothing more than an innocently entertain ing book for children. Will it be objected that there are many such already? I know there are, - hundreds, perhaps thousands - but mine is a new one. It occurred to me some time since, to have the care of a dear little girl, during a tedious illness; and a new book was a great prize to us. There were times too, when none of our many books would do, and then I leaned over her, and in a low voice told her many of the simple events recorded here. Should my book prove entertain taining to any dear sick child, its end will be answered. If I could have written what children call a Sunday Book, I should have felt myself on higher ground, and perhaps should have been more useful, but I have done that which I felt most equal to. Is any further apology required? I was invited to write, - rather an uncommon thing in these days. Other reasons I have none. My tale as to its main incidents is a. True one; its very simplicity proves it, and I am in reality what my signature bespeaks me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
