Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life and Correspondence of Henry Reeve, C. B., D. C. L, Vol. 1 of 2 To Reeve, young, clever, and aspiring, nothing could be more wholesome than the freedom of this society; and the influence of his early initiation in the world of Paris is strongly marked throughout his whole career. When after wards settled in London as a Government servant and a knight of the pen, his youthful training, his intimacy with the leaders of Parisian thought and Parisian manners, and his perfect knowledge of the language, all tended to push him into an exceptional position, both socially and politi cally, while his acquaintance with many out-of - the-way subjects of study - Bohemian and Polish history, for instance - left him in readiness to take advantage of any exceptional opportunity. It was thus that his services came to be used by premiers and presidents of the Council in unofficial embassies, with the idea, perhaps, that the soft answer which turneth away wrath could sometimes be better con veyed, in the first instance, by a personal friend who was known to be in the confidence of ministers, and yet without any laws standi. This is what I have endeavoured to bring into prominence in the following pages, the form of which has necessarily been shaped by the nature of the materials with which I had to work. Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life and Correspondence of Henry Reeve, C. B., D. C. L, Vol. 2 of 2 How far the murderous attempt of Orsini, on January 14th, 1858, was connected with the political relations of France and Italy it is as yet impossible to say. It was, and still is, very commonly believed that in his youth Louis Napoleon had been affiliated to one or other of the secret societies of Italy, that he was still pledged to this, was bound to obey its orders; and that Orsini was an agent to remind him that the attainment of high rank, far from releasing him from the bond, rendered it more stringent, as giving him greater power and facility for carrying out the orders he received. The independence Of Italy was aimed at; and it had been intimated to the Emperor that Orsini's was only the first of similar messages which, if action was not taken, would be followed by a second, with greater care to ensure its delivery. Excerpt from Memoirs of William Hazlitt, Vol. 1 of 2: With Portions of His Correspondence Thirty years have passed. My grandfather has still his admirers. I sometimes permit myself to indulge a belief that their number is on the increase. It might be something to have even to say that it was stationary, that while death kept thinning the ranks, new recruits did not cease to enrol themselves. Excerpt from Diary, Reminiscences, and Correspondence of Henry Crabb Robinson, Barrister-at-Law, F. S. A, Vol. 1 of 2 Mr. Robinson was a voracious devourer of books. He read before he got up, and after he went to bed On his journeys, whether on foot or on a stage-coach, he was in the habit of spending much of his time in reading. The most attractive scenery had to share his attention with a book. He said: I could have no pleasure at the seaside without society. That is the one great want of my life. Excerpt from The Life and Correspondence, Vol. 1 of 2: Of Sir Bartle Frere, Bart I have always felt, that of those who wrote and spoke most strongly against the course I had taken in South Africa, some did so in blind reliance on party leaders, and all from very imperfect knowledge of facts, and I felt sure that in time, though not perhaps in my time, my country men here would do me the same justice as they who live in South Africa have done me from the first. Thus Sir Bartle Frere wrote to a friend about a year before his death. To do him this justice, nothing but a plain statement of facts is needed. That such a statement was not and could not be made in his lifetime is due to several causes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
