Excerpt from Memoir of the Life, Character, and Writings of John Adams: Read March 16, 1827 in the Capitol in the City of Washington at the Request of the Columbian Institute, and Published at Their Order He saw that the honor Of his country was at stake, and he rejoiced in the Opportunity Of showing, to the world, that the cause of America did not depend upon a tempo rary excitement, which could stifle the voice of justice but upon the sober, steady, persevering, determination Of the people to support their rights. He and his friend Quincy were then among the most popular members of the bar; and the Opinion entertained Of their integrity by the Opposite party', could not have been more clearly evinced, than by thus selecting them as counsel for the supposed victims of popular indignation. The counsel managed the cause with great ability, and satisfied a jury, taken from amidst the exasperated multitude, that it was a case Of justifiable homicide.
