Globalization, Cultural Identities, and Media Representations provides a multidirectional approach for understanding the role of media in constructing cultural identities in a newly globalized media environment. The contributors cover a wide range of topics from different geopolitical areas, historical periods, and media genres. Case studies examined include the shift from print to Internet, local representations of modern world cinema and glo/cal television, narrative strategies in transnational literature, and cultural economics of the mediation of world music in India, China, Algeria, Israel, Europe, and the United States. This case study approach allows for deeper insights into the complexity of each cultural subsystem as part of the whole media culture system. This volume looks at a range of texts and practices that address race and its relationship with television. The chapters explore television policy and the management of race, how transnationalism can diminish racial diversity, historical questions of representation, the myth of a multicultural England and more. They also provide analyses of programmes such as Doctor Who, Shoot the Messenger, Desi DNA, Survivors and Top Boy, all of which are considered in the context of the broadcast environments that helped to create them. While efforts have been made to put diverse portrayals on screen, there are still significant problems with the stories being told.

This book analyses the diverse and complex interactions between the emancipatory practices of precarious (i.e. forced, vulnerable, undocumented or deported) migrants enabled by information and communication technologies, and the constraints imposed by technological tools used for surveillance and migration control. It explores the digital empowerment-control nexus by articulating the use of digital technologies - whether by migrants themselves, civil society actors or institutions - with their mediating role in the processes of empowerment, surveillance and migration control.
