The report gives the results of an experimental investigation of the pressure fluctuations associated with turbulent flow in a rigid pipe. Measurements were made of the power-spectral and cross-spectral densities of the pressure fluctuations on the pipe wall for fully developed turbulent air flow over a Reynolds number range of approximately 20 to 1. The variation in Reynolds number was achieved by variation in flow velocity. The spectral content of the pressure field was investigated for frequency components from 10 to 10,000 Hz. Special attention was given to obtaining spectral levels for the low-frequency components of the pressure field because power spectral density in the low wave-number region for turbulent pipe flow is still uncertain.

The turbulent boundary layer (TBL) noise generated inside an aircraft can have a detrimental impact on humans. In an effort to better understand TBL physics and measurement techniques, measurements of the fluctuating wall-pressure beneath a TBL have been performed in an anechoic wind tunnel. The measurements were made using an array of pressure microphones provided by Bombardier Aerospace. Analysis of frequency spectra indicated several shortcomings of the array, namely a low saturation limit and electrical issues, however the low speed spectra agree well with the Goody prediction model. Furthermore, an investigation of the relationship between wall-pressure and velocity fluctuations was performed using a pinhole mounted microphone and simultaneous hot-wire boundary layer measurements. This revealed flow interference from the hot-wire apparatus, obscuring the expected relationships and trends. Several areas of improvement have been identified, including higher saturation limit microphones, LDA for velocity measurements, and increasing rigidity of the experimental setup.

Measurements made on some of the characteristics of the turbulent pressure field at the wall of a cylindrical pipe yielded root-mean-square pressure levels, power spectra, longitudinal space-time correlations, and convection velocity over a limited range of Reynolds number. The root-mean-square pressure levels were proportional to the dynamic pressure and when nondimensionalized by use of the dynamic pressure were observed to be independent of the Reynolds number and approximately equal to 0.008 over the Reynolds number range examined. The measurements indicate the existence of an apparent downstrea c nvection of the pressure field at a rate which is approximately the mean discharge velocity of the pipe flow. The pressure field in addition to being convected was also dispersed. Estimates of the scale of the turbulence were obtained. A limited statistical analysis of the pressure time history indicates that the amplitude variation is Gaussian. (Author).
