Swiss artist, architect, designer, typographer, and theorist Max Bill (1908 94) was one of the most important exponents of concrete and constructive art and a key figure in European applied arts and design history. Educated by such prominent teachers as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandisky, and Walter Gropius at the Bauhaus, at the start of his career in the 1930s. In the 1950s he teamed up with Inge Scholl and Otl Aicher to found the legendary Ulm College of Design in Ulm, Germany, of which he became the first director. In his work, Max Bill carried on the legacy of the Bauhaus, both as an artist and a teacher, and made a decisive and lasting contribution to twentieth-century cultural life. The international touring exhibition -Die gute Form- was conceived by Max Bill on behalf of the Swiss Werkbund and was shown for the first time in 1949 at the Basel Mustermesse trade fair. This publication documents Bill's initiative in reproductions of the original display panels and layout plans for the venues visited by the exhibition, and places Die gute Form in a theoretical context that considers its reception and impact within the history of design.

The catalogue is published on the occasion of the first individual exhibition of Georges Vantongerloo in Spain. The catalogue reveals the grounding of his work in the re-conceptualisation of pictorial and sculptural space that marked the abstract tendencies in art of the early 20th century. In the 1920s an important part of the Vantongerloos investigation was centred on colour as physical and perceptive phenomenon. Later, Vantongerloo will conceive his works according to strictly geometric rules, algebraic afterwards, to turn, thus, into the founder of the mathematical thought in art in our epoch. Genuine pioneer in the abstract sculpture field, the artist will continue, after 1945, proposing peculiar versions of that kind of sculpture, abandoning all the reference to a built geometry, and opening to a subjective approach to the universe of cosmology.
