En formation d'adultes la question du sens, du rapport entre pratique et théorie se pose avec acuité. C'est en particulier le cas de l'enseignement du calcul décimal: dans la pratique quotidienne, les objets du calcul sont des grandeurs économiques ou physiques. Par contre la théorie académique du calcul décimal repose sur le concept de fraction. Ce concept semble à certains adultes trop éloigné de leur pratique; du coup, il préfèrent renoncer à l'acquisition d'un savoir théorique en matière de calcul. En nous appuyant sur la dynamique de conceptualisation mise àjour par Vygotski, nous montrons qu'il est possible d'offrir aux adultes une alternative théorique aux théories académiques. Il s'agit de théories mathématiques fondées sur des concepts proches des adultes, c'est à dire situés dans leur zone de proche développement. Nous les appelons théories de proximité. Ces théories exploitent et formalisent des schèmes mis en oeuvre spontanément par les adultes dans des situations familières; par exemple, en formation de base, nous construisons une théorie du calcul basée sur le concept de grandeur. Mais le concept de théorie de proximité n'est pas réservé à la formation de base. Nous proposons des théories de proximité dans d'autres domaines: calcul algébrique, calcul différentiel et intégral, calcul des probabilités, calcul infinitésim0al. Ces théories formalisent des objets d'enseignement expérimentés de longue date par le département mathématiques du C.U.E.E.P ( Centre Université Economie d'Education Permanente) avec le public préparant le D.A.E.U ( Diplôme d'Accès aux Etudes Universitaires ).

How can we deal with the diversity of theories in mathematics education? This was the main question that led the authors of this book to found the Networking Theories Group. Starting from the shared assumption that the existence of different theories is a resource for mathematics education research, the authors have explored the possibilities of interactions between theories, such as contrasting, coordinating, and locally integrating them. The book explains and illustrates what it means to network theories; it presents networking as a challenging but fruitful research practice and shows how the Group dealt with this challenge considering five theoretical approaches, namely the approach of Action, Production, and Communication (APC), the Theory of Didactical Situations (TDS), the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD), the approach of Abstraction in Context (AiC), and the Theory of Interest-Dense Situations (IDS). A synthetic presentation of each theory and their connections shows how the activity of networking generates questions at the theoretical, methodological and practical levels and how the work on these questions leads to both theoretical and practical progress. The core of the book consists of four new networking case studies which illustrate what exactly can be gained by this approach and what kind of difficulties might arise.
