It began with a frame story in which Master Humphrey tells about himself and his small circle of friends. Master Humphrey was a lonely man who lived in London. He kept old manuscripts in an antique grandfather's clock by the chimney-corner. He decided that he would start a club, called Master Humphrey's Clock, where the members would read aloud their manuscripts to the others.

It started with a frame story about Master Humphrey and his small group of friends.Master Humphrey is a lonely man from London. He keeps old manuscripts in a chimney-corner antique longcase clock. One day, he decides to start a small club called Master Humphrey's Clock, in which members read out their manuscripts to the other members. Master Humphrey is one of the members, a deaf gentleman named Jack Redburn, a retired merchant named Owen Miles, and Mr Pickwick from The Pickwick Papers. Mr Weller's Watch, a mirror club in the kitchen run by Mr Weller, has members such as Humphrey's maid, the barber, and Sam Weller.
