Draws on critical and radical change theory to equip both aspiring and practicing library and teacher candidates with practical, research-based ideas for enacting critical literacy practices in middle grade libraries and classrooms. Genre Based Strategies to Promote Critical Literacy in Grades 4-8 provides strategies and lesson plans with additional resources and tools for school librarians and teachers to engage middle grade students in reading children's literature through a critical literacy lens. To be critically literate readers and thinkers, students must learn to question what they read, asking themselves who wrote the text, why the text was written, and how the text positions its readers and others. Teaching students how to read from a critical literacy stance is a timely and relevant practice in a world in which text is available instantly and on nearly any mobile device. In many cases, preparation programs for school librarians and teachers do not teach candidates how to incorporate critical literacy practices in library and classroom settings. This book provides both pre-service and in-service school librarians and teachers with that professional development and guidance for teaching critical literacy in children's literature courses.

Dr. A’Pal Chi is a mathematician sworn by oath to reveal none of his findings. His labs at the university are the only facilities still in operation on his doomed planet. He is working on a complex formula that will change the world if he can figure it out. One of his theories removes zero from the number-line and allows to equal 3. His c2 equation allows travel at light speed. So, his team builds a grand new ship capable of carrying two thousand people on an eight-and-a-half-year trip to the stars. Back on his home world, a race was on with the cities of the east. They have their own light speed program and have the same destination planet in mind. As Dr. Chi embarks on his journey and transforms from mathematician to explorer, he leads the charge as history, mythology, and religion are examined in new ways, through archeology, space travel, ritual, and legend. As he, his team, and his crew search for evidence of ancient civilizations on new worlds, they determine that they are not alone in this vast universe full of surprises. In this science fiction tale, a mathematician turned explorer travels on light-speed adventures in space where mythology springs to life and his destiny awaits.

Reaching Reluctant Young Readers features 150 middle-grade books. Each profiled title has the potential to hook the reluctant reader and lure them to read the entire book. To specifically encourage elementary and middle-school-age reluctant children to read, there is first a pitch to get the reader’s attention. That is followed by a short reading passage to “set the hook” and encourage the young person to read the rest of the book on their own. Further, the book contains several hundred additional recommended titles. The books selected for this collection were chosen following the criteria of reluctant reader books created by the Quick Picks committee sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association. While these guidelines were designed for young adult books, they also work well for middle-grade books. The criteria include: clear writing (no convoluted long sentences with sophisticated vocabulary), high interest “hook” in the first few pages, well-defined characters, interesting plot, and familiar themes.
