The marriage records abstracted here derive from microfilm copies of the original bonds and from a microfilm copy of a register of marriage bonds maintained from 1851 by the clerk of the county court. The arrangement is alphabetical by the surname of the groom, and each entry has the name of the bride, the date of the marriage bond and, where recorded, the names of the minister, witnesses, and bondsmen. About 9,000 marriage bonds are abstracted.

Marriages of Granville County contains abstracts of all marriage bonds issued in Granville County between 1753 and 1868--some 8,000 bonds, mentioning a total of 23,000 persons! The data are arranged throughout by the surname of the groom, and each entry provides the name of the bride, the date of the marriage bond or officiant's return, or both, and the names of clergymen, witnesses, and bondsmen.

The book has a lot of historical content along with some poetry and humor. The main part is falily history including some of the sescenants of James Gram born in Scotland in 1670 along with documentation on the descendants

Based on recorded wills and original wills at the North Carolina State Archives as well as "Loose Estate Papers" of intestates, these abstracts cover not only wills but powers of attorney, bonds, inventories, bills of sale, etc. Significantly, Surry County lay within the Granville Proprietary at its formation, and after Lord Granville's death in 1763 until 1778, the Proprietary land office did not reopen, making it very difficult--but for these will abstracts--for the present-day researcher to establish the residence of many individuals during that time period. What is more, as there are no extant marriage bonds for Surry County for the period 1771 to 1780, these will abstracts assume an importance out of all proportion to their customary value.

Mills Higgins Flack, a leader of the Farmers' Alliance and the county's first Populist in the state House, was allegedly murdered on August 28, 1900, by Avery Mills, an African American. The author (Flack's great-great-grandson) considers the phenomena of racial lynching, the Populist movement in the county, the white supremacy movement of the state's Democratic party and the county's KKK activities.
