FOREWORD Marine aviation traces its origin to 1912, when First Lieutenant Alfred A. Cunningham reported for naval aviation training. By 1914 Marines had started using aircraft and would see Marine aviation flying its first combat missions during the ending months of World War I. Through operations in Nicaragua, Haiti, China, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and Southwest Asia, Marine aviation has distinguished itself as a formidable contributor to the Marine air-ground task force (MAGTF) combined arms team. This publication focuses on the Marine Corps philosophy of command and control, planning, operations, and emerging concepts and capabilities for commanders and staff officers who are responsible for planning and executing offensive air support operations. Offensive air support doctrine first began within the Marine Corps in 1935 when the Tentative Landing Operations Manual was published and has developed over the past 65 years into today's Marine Corps Warfighting Publication (MCWP) 3-23, Offensive Air Support. Marine Corps was forged in combat primarily during World War II when Marine aircraft and antiaircraft artillery were stationed throughout the Pacific basin. Campaigns for Guadalcanal and the Marshall Islands and other operations shaped today's concepts. Marine defense battalions employed ground-based air defense assets. This book provides a comprehensive account of the use of airpower in the first year of the Ukraine conflict. Airpower has been central to political, military, and public debates from the outset of the Russo‐Ukrainian war. After having started with whether the US and NATO should attempt to establish a No‐Fly Zone over Ukraine to protect the civilian population, the international discussion soon focused on the underperformance of Russian airpower. The fact that the initial contest for air superiority over Ukraine ended in an uneasy state of mutual denial came as a surprise to Western analysts, who suspected Kyiv would fall within a relatively short period of time. The surprise and relief that it did not only fueled urgent and ongoing discussions on how NATO nations could support the Ukrainian war effort. Regardless of nationality, age, level of education, or ethnicity, the near‐daily footage of Russian missiles, bombs and drones hitting residential areas and bombarding infrastructure to deprive an entire population of electricity and water has been emotionally imprinted on generations who have only known peace. 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Gold Book - February 2019 Air Assault Handbook. The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) has a long and rich heritage. As the world's only functional Air Assault Division, the 101st Airborne has pioneered the development of Air Assault tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs). These tactics were quantifiably demonstrated in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm and most recently during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. We are currently at war with dangerous and adaptive terrorist forces in complex environments. Simultaneously, the Division must remain poised to confront peer threats on a conventional battlefield. In response, the Division continually refines its TTPs, exploiting our unique capabilities to defeat our nation's enemies. References such as FM 3-99 Airborne and Air Assault Operations capture basic Air Assault Doctrine. These manuals' currency fluctuates in the changing environment and do not often capture the required level of detail. Therefore, the Gold Book serves to describe those TTPs unique to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). It is intended to be a "how-to" guide for those serving in the Division and those modular units who will be employed with the Division in training and combat operations. The Gold Book retains a focus on brigade and battalion air assault task forces. To address the demands of current operations, information on smaller scale air assaults and supporting operations is included. Regardless of echelon, the fundamentals of air assault planning and execution remain the same and are based on air assault doctrine. FM 3-99 Airborne and Air Assault Operations and the baseline skills taught in The Sabalauski Air Assault School. Doctrine provides a military organization with a common philosophy, a language, a purpose, and unity of effort. Rather than establishing a set of hard and fast rules, the objective of doctrine is to foster initiative and creative thinking. To this end, FM 3-06 discusses major Army operations in an urban environment. This environment, consisting of complex terrain, a concentrated population, and an infrastructure of systems, is an operational environment in which Army forces will operate. In the future, it may be the predominant operational environment. Each urban operation is unique and will differ because of the multitude of combinations presented by the threat, the urban area itself, the major operation of which it may be part (or the focus), and the fluidity of societal and geopolitical considerations. Therefore, there will always exist an innate tension between Army doctrine, the actual context of the urban operation, and future realities. Commanders must strike the proper balance between maintaining the capability to respond to current threats and preparing for future challenges.
