This bulletin contains six papers that provide details for each component of the Fraser Lowland Hydrogeology Project. The principal aims of the Project included: developing a groundwater-hydrogeology database; testing the efficacy of various geophysical techniques for mapping; and undertaking preliminary groundwater modelling. The first paper outlines the database structure, with emphasis on the methods developed for mapping aquifers & aquitards using a geographic information system. The next three papers describe research on using electromagnetic, seismic reflection, and ground penetrating radar methods for mapping Fraser Lowland aquifers. The fourth paper focuses on the Brookswood aquifer and the use of radar to identify critical hydro-stratigraphic relationships. The final paper outlines preliminary two- and three-dimensional groundwater flow models for the Fraser delta and the Brookswood aquifer. Includes author index.

Woldwide, developed and developing countries increasingly depend on groundwater resources for domestic water supply. Since groundwater is a hidden resource and individuals cannot see how much has been used and what is left, this book attempts to make global groundwater use more visible so that policy makers can make informed decisions as to its management. Organized into six geographical regions, the authors describe the various physical, cultural and institutional challenges of groundwater policy and management faced by countries worldwide. Analysis of the challenges and responses to groundwater management at the national level hopes to generate a broader understanding for societies across the globe. Each chapter provides the physical geography and demographics of the country, its water use, problems, law, politics and policy and future implications. Chapters on representative countries within North America, Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Australia and China and Africa provide a comprehensive perspective of groundwater issues internationally.

There is a general consensus that for the next few decades at least, the Earth will continue its warming. This will inevitably bring about serious environmental problems. For human society, the most severe will be those related to alterations of the hydrological cycle, which is already heavily influenced by human activities. Climate change will directly affect groundwater recharge, groundwater quality and the freshwater-seawater interface. The variations of groundwater storage inevitably entail a variety of geomorphological and engineering effects. In the areas where water resources are likely to diminish, groundwater will be one of the main solutions to prevent drought. In spite of its paramount importance, the issue of 'Climate Change and Groundwater' has been neglected. This volume presents some of the current understanding of the topic.
