Este Manual de Arqueología y Paleoantropología cognitivas intenta mostrar de forma muy interdisciplinar cómo se ha construido este nuevo sistema de análisis cognitivo del comportamiento humano durante la Prehistoria. A lo largo de más de 2 millones de años nuestro género Homo fue humanizando sus comportamientos al acumular y armonizar sus avances biológicos y culturales en el nicho humano. Analizar los mecanismos psicobiológicos que se retroalimentan del desarrollo cultural (lenguaje, sentimientos, tecnología, simbolismo, ritos, etc.) que documentamos en los restos humanos fósiles y en el registro arqueológico, constituyen el objetivo principal de este libro, junto con una propuesta metodológica para el análisis cognitivo de los comportamientos humanos prehistóricos.

Las dificultades en los estudios prehistóricos siempre han obligado a utilizar todas las aportaciones que puedan ayudar en su interpretación, con independencia de la disciplina que se trate. En este sentido, el presente libro constituye un intento de elaborar una nueva vía metodológica en el estudio de la conducta humana en las épocas prehistóricas, por medio del desarrollo de una síntesis multidisciplinar realizada con las aportaciones actualizadas de varias ciencias relacionadas con los seres humanos (Biología evolutiva, Neurología, Psicología y Sociología). Tal síntesis ha permitido crear un modelo psicobiológico sobre nuestro comportamiento, que puede aplicarse en todas las fases de nuestra evolución cultural. Su utilización interpretativa de los datos arqueológicos se sitúa dentro de la Arqueología cognitiva, aunque con una orientación psicobiológica. En este trabajo, se ha aplicado en dos aspectos de gran importancia en los estudios paleolíticos actuales, como son el origen y desarrollo del simbolismo y lenguaje humano, y su importancia en el periodo transicional al Paleolítico Superior en Europa con la aparición del Auriñaciense.
