This title was first published in 2001. This study explores the operation of the Treuhandanstalt, the trust agency responsible for implementing the massive privatization programme launched in the former East Germany in 1990. It evaluates the level of satisfaction that stakeholder groups typically felt with regard to the agency, its actions and its achievements.

For many years, Germany has been confronted with the need for political, economic and societal change. In recent federal and state election, the two major political parties have seen an erosion of their electoral acceptance, while newcomers like "Die Linke" (the leftist) party, with strong roots in East Germany, are gaining strength. Problems created by the worldwide financial crisis are exacerbated in Germany by high welfare costs, above average benefits and abundant vacation time, as well as a general entitlement mentality, resisting badly needed change. Help comes from an unexpected quarter: East Germany. In fact, the East German people had to learn tough lessons, living through the experience of two political systems and having to deal with much adversity in the process. Recently, however, a healthy self-confidence and defiant resourcefulness has reappeared after a long period of frustration, hopelessness, and resignation. New developments in the political, economic, and socio-cultural area seem to be harbingers of welcome transformation, which may give the East German people the opportunity to become agents of change toward a new Germany.

The transformation of east Germany since unification has wrought vast changes in the economy and in society and left deep scars as the types of social protection offered by the centralised socialism of the previous regime gave way to uncertainties and individualised life chances. Social Transformation in Eastern Germany investigates the deep economic and social processes which east Germany has undergone, highlighting the restructuring, the social impacts and the stresses of adjustment experienced by key social groups whose workplace and social context has been recast almost out of recognition since 1990.

Produced with the International Peace Academy in New York, this volume focuses largely on the conflicts of the 1990s and future projects, examining multifacteted issues involved in conflict management, suggesting new approaches and tools for future conflict management.
