Excerpt from Madame Leroux, Vol. 2 Lucy, on her arrival at Douro House, was put under the charge of Fraulein Schulze, who had orders to set her in the way of her duties, and initiate her into the routine of the house. The Fraulein was a plain, spectacled, hard-featured woman, over fifty, who seemed to have become a sort of governessing-machine, and to have neither loves nor hates, hopes nor fears, nor any human emotion unconnected with the school room. She did not 'receive Lucy very graciously. It was very disagreeable, she grumbled, to have a new teacher just at the end of the term, when everything was more or less in confusion, and she declared speaking excellent English with a peculiarly hideous accent - that Miss Smith would not have time to learn her ladies before the holidays arrived. During the whole of the first day after her arrival Lucy did not once see Madame Leroux. Madame did not take much part in the general teaching, and sometimes did not enter the schoolroom for several days together; but she was supposed To exercise a general supervision over all the studies, and would now and then examine some special class in her own room. There were, however, countless masters and mistresses from outside professors of this and that, who came and went all day long; rushing in to give three or four lessons of fifteen minutes' duration each, and rushing out again, watch in hand, to repeat the same process elsewhere. Excerpt from Memoirs of Madame Lafarge, Vol. 2 For the first time I felt all the poetry of spring, away from villers-hellon. All the joys of mv beloved grandfather returned after the winter. Alas! He would return no more. Mv heart failed me. The smiling face of spring appeared to me ungrateful and neglectful. Lalo's thoughts and feelings sympathised with mine, and we were both affected by painful reminiscences. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
