This report summarizes the results of lumber recovery studies at four sawmills in western Oregon and western Washington; two dimension mills, one grade mill, and one timber mill were included. Results from individual mills are reported and discussed. The four mills were also combined to approximate "average" conversion of logs to lumber for the region. Recovery information is presented by diameter and log grade for lumber volume, lumber grade, and lumber and log value.

Excerpt from Lumber Recovery From Old-Growth Coast Douglas-Fir The volume of commercial Coast Douglas-fir sawtimber is estimated to be in excess of 394 billion board feet. About 10 billion board feet of Coast Douglas fir is harvested annually. This is about 55 percent of the total softwood lumber production in the United States. There is an urgent need for better methods of appraising the quality of this important timber resource. Estimates of the recovery that can be obtained from Coast Douglas-fir sawtimber are needed by forest land managers, timber buyers, and timber processors for efficient utilization of the resource for lumber, veneer, pulp, or other products.
