From Sarah M. Eden, the USA Today Bestselling author of the Longing for Home series, LOVE REMAINS is a new romance novel set in the beloved world of Hope Springs. For nearly a year, Tavish O'Connor has carried the crushing weight of his family's future on his shoulders. He has taken on the care of his youngest brother, Finbarr, who lost his eyesight in a terrible accident. But the lad needs more than Tavish can provide. Finbarr needs hope. Cecily Attwater specializes in hope. As a tutor to the newly blind, she has dedicated her life to helping others overcome the obstacles she herself has conquered. Her new assignment in a remote corner of Wyoming proves trickier than usual: Finbarr refuses to learn. To make matters worse, his family-and the other Irish townspeople-are less than thrilled to discover an Englishwoman in their haven. Cecily's only hope lies in securing the cooperation of her pupil's brother, Tavish, who happens to be her harshest critic and quite possibly the most frustrating man she's ever known. For Finbarr's sake, Tavish and Cecily forge an uneasy alliance that, as the weeks pass, tiptoes toward something deeper than either dares admit or face, and toward a future they know to be impossible. There can be no hope of a happy outcome for an Irish man and an English woman amongst a people reeling from violence and centuries of hatred between their two homelands. In the tradition of Michener, The Love Remains chronicles the dramatic events of 19th century Maui, through the life of Kale Davis, the last Hawaiian Chiefess to rule the land now known as Kapalua Resort. 'He waiwai 'oukou i ka'u 'ike.so precious are our ancestors in my eyes. I was transported to the times of my kupuna, as if it were a 'movie in my mind'. This is a historical novel that won't disappoint. -Aloha Keko'olani, M.A., Instructor, Hawaiian-Pacific Island Studies, Honolulu Community College 'With consummate skill, Katherine Smith creates far more than a mere romance. Through interaction of her main protagonists, she documents the rich cultural, ethnic, and linguistic history of Hawai'i's Old Kingdom during a period of irrevocable expansion. -Randolph Klawiter, PhD., Professor Emeritus, Notre Dame University In 1817, 20-yr-old Kale Davis flees a broken marriage, hoping Honokahua, Maui will be her refuge and a place of belonging. Instead, this poor fishing and farming village awarded to Kale's late father by Kamehameha the Great, makes far greater demands-and offers much sweeter rewards-than the young chiefess could even imagine. Torn between her Hawaiian and Caucasian roots, uncertain about her own abilities and unprepared for leadership, Kale can offer only her keen intelligence, a deep love for the land and her solemn oath to rule her people righteously. With steadfast determination and help from her five husbands, Kale leads Honokahua through drought, famine, epidemics and a time of frenetic change that threatens to sweep away a millennia-old culture, transforming Hawai'i from Old Kingdom to Industrial Age in just five decades. Even as Honokahua and herpeople thrive, Kale suffers sacrifice, violence and heartbreak before finding spiritual completeness and enduring love.

Hemda Horovitz is nearing the end of her life. As she lies in bed in Jerusalem, memories from the past flood her thoughts: her childhood in the kibbutz spent under the gaze of her stern, pioneer father; the lake that was her only solace; and her own two children-one she could never love enough, and the other whom she loved too much. Avner, the beloved child, has grown up to be a heavy, anguished man, disillusioned by his work and trapped in a loveless marriage. When visiting his mother in the hospital, he witnesses a devoted couple's final moments together; after the man's death Avner becomes obsessed with finding the woman, and a strange and delicate relationship unfolds. Dina, Hemda's daughter, has put aside her career in order to give her teenage daughter, Nitzan, the warmth she never received from her own mother. But Nitzan is withdrawing from her, and Dina is overcome by a longing to adopt another child-a longing that, if fulfilled, may destroy her fragile family. Zeruya Shalev's electrifying new novel is at once a meditation on the state of modern Israel and a profound exploration of family, yearning, compromise, and the insistent pull of the past.

An illuminating history of the song for every kind of music lover Often today, the word ‘song’ is used to describe all music. A free-jazz improvisation, a Hindustani raga, a movement from a Beethoven symphony: apparently, they’re all songs. But they’re not. From Sia to Springsteen, Archie Roach to Amy Winehouse, a song is a specific musical form. It’s not so much that they all have verses and choruses – though most of them do – but that they are all relatively short and self-contained; they have beginnings, middles and ends; they often have a single point of view, message or story; and, crucially, they unite words and music. Thus, a Schubert song has more in common with a track by Joni Mitchell or Rihanna than with one of Schubert’s own symphonies. The Song Remains the Same traces these connections through seventy-five songs from different cultures and times: love songs, anthems, protest songs, lullabies, folk songs, jazz standards, lieder and pop hits; ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ to ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Jerusalem’ to ‘Jolene’. Unpicking their inner workings makes familiar songs strange again, explaining and restoring the wonder, joy (or possibly loathing) the reader experienced on first hearing. ‘As much about singing, musicianship and recording as it is about songwriting, this eclectic ride through a unique choice of songs (everyone will argue for alternatives) is cleverly curated and littered with intriguing details about the creators and their times, filled with loving cross-references to other songs and deft musical analysis. I defy anyone not to leap online to listen to the unfamiliar, or re-listen to old favourites in light of new detail. One of the best games in this book is figuring out why one song follows the other: there’s always an intelligent, often very funny, link.’ —Robyn Archer
