This pioneering volume of essays explores the destruction of great libraries since ancient times and examines the intellectual, political and cultural consequences of loss. Fourteen original contributions, introduced by a major re-evaluative history of lost libraries, offer the first ever comparative discussion of the greatest catastrophes in book history from Mesopotamia and Alexandria to the dispersal of monastic and monarchical book collections, the Nazi destruction of Jewish libraries, and the recent horrifying pillage and burning of books in Tibet, Bosnia and Iraq.

This is a tale of three souls, and of their origins that exist within the shadows. Of the madness that exists within the fabric of the backdrop of our world, and of the love that can spawn from within the darkest places... Since the very beginning of time, he has existed, lurked, stalked, and killed from within the dark shadows of time. Never has Raven felt anything except for the madness that tore at his mind, and the never-ending pain of knowing he would forever exist alone. Until fate led to a chance encounter, with two others like himself, and sent him onto an entirely new path towards the unknown. Together, the children of the night, the forever young, begin their journey of fate designed to love, unbreakable bonds, as the old prophecies begin to come to light as if every blood lust step they have taken, has already been written by the fates of old. Will Raven and Luna set their own paths, or is their fate already determined by a force they cannot stand against? Are Lilith's fears come to be a reality in which the madness of the abyss comes to be too much and consumes the very essence of these three dark souls? But now what of all the new unknown forces that are now making their pressence known, as they are lurking within the shadows of time, and within the very madness that lies within Raven's fragmented sanity. Could these be the very same forces that seem to be laying forth the path on which Raven, Luna, and Lilith begin to embark on? Will this journey lead them to the origins of the lost child, and bring forth the light in which the whispering shadows must reveal their faces to the children of the night. Stepping out of the darkness in which they hide, and elighten all with their true intent?

This Top Five Classics illustrated edition of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven includes: • All 25 illustrations by Gustave Doré for Harper & Brothers’ 1884 edition • An informative Introduction • A detailed Biography of Edgar Allan Poe • The illustrated version and text-only version of the full poem No poem has ever received the kind of immediate and overwhelming response that Poe’s “The Raven” did when it first appeared in the New York Evening Mirror on January 29, 1845. It made Poe an overnight sensation (though his great fame never brought him much wealth) and the poem, a powerfully haunting elegy to lost love, remains one of the most beloved and recognizable verses in the English language. The illustrations that accompany this Top Five Classics edition are reproductions of the renowned French artist Gustave Doré’s steel-plate engravings created for Harper & Brothers’ 1884 release of The Raven. It would be Doré’s last commission as he died shortly after completing the 25 illustrations in January 1883. His illustrations would become famous in their own right, evoking as they do the lyrical and mystical air of Poe’s masterpiece.

The Lost Words by composer James Burton takes its inspiration and text from the award-winning 'cultural phenomenon' and book of the same name by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris: a book that was, in turn, a creative response to the removal of everyday nature words like acorn, newt and otter from a new edition of a widely used children's dictionary. Both the book and Burton's 32-minute work, which is written in 12 short movements for upper-voice choir in up to 3 voice parts (with either orchestral or piano accompaniment), celebrates each lost word with a beautiful poem or 'spell', magically brought to life in Burton's music. At its heart, the work delivers a powerful message about the need to close the gap between childhood and the natural world. Burton's piece was co-commissioned by the Hallé Concerts Society for the Hallé Children's Choir and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The piano accompaniment version was premiered at the Tanglewood Festival in 2019 by the Boston Symphony Children's Choir, of which Burton is founder and director. The Hallé Children's Choir will premiere the orchestral version of the full work in Manchester, UK, post-pandemic. Vocal Score Co-commission by Boston Symphony and Hallé Concerts Society for their respective Children's Choirs. Two versions - with orchestral or with piano accompaniment. The vocal score is the same for both versions. James Burton is a composer but also a conductor. He is conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and choral director of the Boston Symphony. The book The Lost Words, exquisitely designed, has won multiple awards and is an international best-seller. The vocal score includes Jackie Morris's beautiful imagery in its cover design.
